She’s mine.

Not yours, squib face.

When he got home, he’d raise it with her, if only because it had ramifications for their professional arrangement.

Who are you trying to kid? You’re fucking jealous.

He tried to scrub that thought away, but as he did, another one surfaced. They were at real risk of a surprise visit from the Council officials to check on their relationship’s validity.

Quentin Jordak’s words echoed through his head. Truth was, they could turn up at whatever hour they chose, inspect his and Min’s quarters. Every little detail would be examined.

It would be bad news if they were found in separate rooms.

Shooting forward, Ethan grabbed his internal handset and called Ebony.

“Come up to my office now. We have a problem,” he demanded curtly.

When she arrived, he was pacing the room, still flicking the pen in tense fingers. After he’d explained the situation, Ebony said, “Well, there’s no other option. You’ll have to share a room.”

“I can’t ask Min to do that.”

“You can’t be in separate rooms, Ethan, not now they’ve threatened to visit. They can descend at any time to search for evidence, intimate evidence. There was a case recently where the human was living over the mountains, and they were photoshopping pics of them together in bed and got caught. End of deal. So obviously they’re clamping down big time now.”

Ethan swore under his breath.

“There’s something else that’s weird. Something about this guy and Min. He went nuts when I mentioned her name.”

“Well, she is a Westwind. That would put their high-breed noses out of joint.”

Ethan grunted. He knew there was more to it than that.

“I’ve got a solution to the bedroom thing. You can sleep in your dressing room and let Min have the bed,” Ebony chirped brightly. “We’ll put a sofa bed in the closet. That way you can close it up and hop into bed together quick smart if they turn up.” Ebony chuckled. “Poor Min, you’ll have to pay her a bonus for this.”

“It’s not fucking funny,” he growled as she sashayed to the door, still chirping to herself.

After she’d left, Ethan threw the pen across the room, then called his chauffeur.

It was time to go home and have an awkward conversation with Min.

CHAPTER 13

Min was just about to take the stairs to her room when a squeal of delight pierced her ears.

She turned to see a billow of rainbow silk and sequins descending on her. And then she was engulfed in a dragon hug that smelled of exotic spices.

Cressida, of course.

When Cressida released her, she had tears in her eyes. “Oh, my dear girl, I was coming to thank you for your intervention last night. So bold. So confident. So daring. And yet, it worked. I have never, ever seen Beau calm down so quickly. How did you do it?”

“Honestly, Cressida, I don’t know. I just felt… knowing Ethan and how upset he gets about Beau, and seeing them arcing up, that I needed to intervene.”

“Have you been around many dragons before, Min?” Cressida had already linked arms with her, and seemed intent on accompanying her to the elevator.

“A few, in the bookshop.” Very rarely did dragons appear in the bookshop, to be honest. Hardly surprising if all their books had been burnt.

“Generally, dragons are somewhat distrustful of humans. Sad really, since we used to have such a great relationship with your kind. Many moons ago.”

“Do you know much about that, Cressida?”
