He bent and scooped Lucia up, faced her toward his chest so the others wouldn’t see her brokenness in this moment. She wouldn’t want that.

“Ten-ten wasn’t burning in her vision,” Landon barked out.

“W-what?” Cadence asked, looking absolutely stunned.

Landon jutted his chin toward the cream-colored trailer at the edge of the trailer park. “Protect that one.”

Cadence and Jenna began jogging toward it. Kru followed, limping badly. Lucas was glaring at Gunner’s bear pacing the cage, rage in his eyes.

“You’re done,” he murmured. “I don’t give a shit about your reasons. You are not a part of my Crew from this day forward.”

Chills lifted all the fine hairs on Landon’s body. He was hurting so badly, but the others were injured too. He could heal this.

He just needed to get to the box in the back of his truck that had all of his medical supplies.

“Landon?” Lucia whispered.

The raw ache in her eyes broke his heart.

“Yeah?”

“You know.”

“I know what?”

Her face crumpled, and she tried her best to compose it again. “You know what you have to do.”

He stopped walking, surrounded by flames that stretched from the firepit to the trailers. The heat burned his skin, and he held Lucia closer, angled away from the fire.

“I don’t understand,” he said softly.

Her eyes darted to the trailer at the edge of the woods. It was Kru’s, and it hadn’t yet caught fire.

She wanted him to burn it?

“I don’t have to.”

“I saw it.”

“We can save that one.”

She shook her head. “I understand it now.”

He shook his head, denying what she was asking. Fuck, his eyes burned. “Why?”

“Because this is the rebuild. Landon, burn it.”

Numbly, he set her on her feet. “You’re sure?”

Lucia nodded. “I saw it. If we don’t burn it now, something else bad will happen. That house is meant to burn.”

This ache in his chest was worse than any gash on his body. It was open and burning, seeping and agony.

Lucia padded gingerly to the fire near the firepit, grabbed a long stick that was on fire, and held it out.

“You told me in my vision that you were burning it because I asked you to.” She pursed her lips, and a tear streamed down her cheek. The flames reflected in her too-bright eyes. “Burn it.”

Did she understand? Did she know? He would do anything she asked.
