Laura nodded. “Yes. Unconditional love. I need to love all of her, even if I find it –”

“Nuh-uh. You stop right there. You need to love all of her. Just leave it at that.”

“Ok. Yeah, you’re right. As usual. I will get my head around this. Gay sex… just like normal sex, right? Different parts don’t make any difference. As long as it’s between consenting adults, there’s no problem.”

“Exactly. See? You’re learning. I know it’s hard for you, mom. It’s not your fault you were raised this way, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take responsibility and put in the effort to change. Now, do you have the flag?”

Laura grimaced. “I still feel like it’s hypocritical. I mean, I do love Liv, but this seems like a gift under false pretenses.”

“It’s important that you show her support, even if you’re still working on making that support more sincere. You said yourself – you love her, and I know you want to support her, even though you’re finding full acceptance hard at the moment. This will show her – and Kane – that you’re really trying.”

“I am trying. I do want this to work.” Laura pulled a small wrapped package out of her bag. “I hope she likes it.”

“Trust me, she will. Support – especially from people close to them – means just as much to queer folks as it does to everyone else.”

When she found out they would be moving with Liv, Juliette had dragged Laura out of the house to go shopping for a lesbian pride flag. Laura had resisted at first, but she had allowed Juliette to convince her, like she usually did.

Juliette knew that deep down, Laura knew that her beliefs were wrong. That’s why she always allowed Juliette to scold her like a child, and listened attentively whenever Juliette spoke about queer issues. She was sure that with time, her mother would come around.

“Then let’s go. We’ve got a lot of boxes to move.”

They made the first trip from the truck to Kane and Liv’s house. Juliette grabbed a box of books, hoisted it into her arms and started down the driveway.

Kane and Liv were waiting to meet them. Olivia was slightly blocked by the angle, but as they rounded the corner, Juliette caught a full glimpse of her.

Olivia Jones. Phew.

She dropped the box of books, which landed painfully on her toe.

“Fuck! Ow!”

Olivia was suddenly already there, lifting the box of books up. “Here, sit down. Take off your shoe. Let me look at it.”

Juliette gaped at her like an idiot. Olivia, Liv was… well, Liv was stunning. Juliette didn’t think she’d ever met a woman so beautiful, with short wavy honey-colored hair. She was curvy in all the right ways, and her green eyes seemed to see into Juliette’s soul.

Liv wore tight pants and a black button down shirt. Her green eyes fixed Juliette intensely.

“Juliette? Are you alright?”

“I – um. Yes. I’m fine.”

“Can you sit down?”

Juliette flopped down onto the bottom stair by the front door.

“May I take your shoe off?”

Juliette nodded dumbly.

Liv gently removed her shoe and examined her foot. “Ok, it doesn’t seem to be broken, but you’ll have one hell of a bruise. I’ll get you an ice pack.”

Juliette felt her face burning with embarrassment. What a way to make a good first impression on her soon to be step-sister. Why did Liv have to be so beautiful and clearly confident and capable? It wasn’t fair. Juliette had seen beautiful women before, but she had never found herself so totally tongue-tied around them.

Liv went into the house and returned with an ice pack. She placed it gently on Juliette’s foot. Juliette knew that Liv was a CEO, not a doctor, and wondered what knowledge Liv was working from.

“Do you have any medical training?”

“When I got promoted to CEO, I got myself certified in advanced first aid. If someone runs into trouble in the office, I want to be able to help.”
