My heart flutters. I want to argue with him, to express my concerns and doubts, but Ayden’s ardent kiss quickly makes me forget everything else. He wants to stay with me, and right now we’re together, and I want to make the most of these precious hours.

I open my lips and let his tongue in. It instantly ignites this desire in me so intense that it’s almost unbearable. It surges through my body in a wave and sets alight everything it touches.

I put my hands on the back of his head and press myself hard against him. We’re closely intertwined as he lifts me onto his lap, puts his hands on my back, and moves them up and down.

We both breathe faster, and our caresses become more urgent. I push my hands up under Ayden’s shirt and touch his firm, smooth skin. I feel the muscles tensing under my fingers, feel the goosebumps on his skin. I pull off his shirt so I can look at him, touching his chest, and letting my hands wander lower. The whole time I’m staring at him, fascinated by his flawless beauty and the enormous attraction he exerts on me. I see the amused smile playing at the corners of his mouth and find it extremely unfair how the mere sight of him always has such a powerful effect on me.

“You think it’s any different for me when I see you?” he murmurs. “You drive me crazy.”

He cups my face gently in his hands and kisses me in a way that robs me of breath and transports me to another world. Then he pulls my top over my head and traces my hips with his fingertips, giving me goosebumps. He stares at me with fascination and doesn’t take his eyes off mine as his hands move up to my bra straps. He pushes them aside and caresses my bare skin. I close my eyes and surrender to the intoxicating lust. It’s as if I can feel Ayden everywhere: on my skin, inside me, in my very soul.

He kisses my breast, and his hands caress my inner thighs slowly and deliberately. A rush of heat overwhelms me, but it’s far from unpleasant. I want to sink into it and never reemerge. I lean forward slightly and kiss his chest, run my tongue over his skin and hear him gasp. The sound fuels my own arousal, awakening such desire in me that I can barely contain myself. My hands seek out his pants and open them while he looks at me as if he’s never seen anything more beautiful in his life.

I liberate him from his clothing, which is awkward at first because I’m still sitting on him. But then with Ayden’s help, it suddenly happens fast. He peels off the remaining layers of my clothing too and begins to caress me with such skill that I feel as if I might go up in flames at any moment.

We kiss. and I bury my hands in his hair and lower myself down onto him. The feelings are intoxicating, and it becomes clearer to me with every passing second that we belong together. Ayden whispers my name, and I greedily inhale his breath. I wish we could stay like this forever.

I check the time. We’ve been in his room for almost three hours. Way too long, I suddenly realize. I can’t stretch it out any longer. I should be back at the Fabrici house. I can probably expect a major dressing down and an extra training session.

“I have to go,” I say quietly.

Ayden stops caressing my naked back. Those three hours were wonderful. I was able to exist in another world and forget everything else. There was just me and Ayden. Now reality sets in again.

“I’ll give you a ride back. That’ll save you some time.”

I smile gratefully at him, and we get up and prepare to leave.

Once we’re outside, Ayden says, “Wait here. I left the bike in a side street. I’ll bring it around.”

I nod and watch him disappear around the corner. My thoughts are already with the Fabricis. I don’t want them to spoil this precious time, but I can’t help wondering what’s in store for me. Will I be forced to start training immediately? Or will they come up with some other kind of punishment? I hate having to worry about this stuff, and I miss my freedom more than ever.

I hear footsteps behind me and turn around. I’m surprised to see Mr. Collins approaching me with a stern expression.

“There you are. I was looking for you.” He regards me with a cold, accusatory look, and I realize immediately that he knows about the training bluff. “Don’t look so surprised. Holmes is an excellent hunter, and she may be an ambitious trainer, but even she wouldn’t drive a student continuously for five hours without a break. I soon figured out where you must be. Especially since I couldn’t find Ayden anywhere either.”

I meet his icy stare. Why should I avoid it or feel ashamed?

“I couldn’t care less how you two spent the last few hours, although I was hoping Ayden had learned from past mistakes. Apparently, he needs another lesson, which I’m sure he’ll get without my intervention.”

His backhanded insults should make me furious. But I know that Mr. Collins has developed a dislike for me, and I try not to let it get to me.

“That’s not what concerns me right now. What concerns me is that Ayden’s neglecting his duties because of you. And that’s something I can’t tolerate. Ayden has a bright future ahead of him. He’s a talented hunter destined for a career on the Council. He can’t afford to risk all that for your sake.”

“I’d never stand in the way of his plans,” I retort, wondering what exactly he’s driving at.

“Is that so? Then I can’t fathom why he suddenly refused an assignment. He’s never done that before. A strange coincidence, don’t you think? He gets back together with you and starts neglecting his duties.”

I finally understand. “You mean the candidate in Boston that he’s supposed to test?”

He nods. “See? I knew you were involved.”

“It was entirely Ayden’s decision. He just told me that he doesn’t want to accept the assignment. I had nothing to do with it.”

Mr. Collins cocks his head. “Oh, don’t be ridiculous. If it weren’t for you, he’d go. And if you actually cared about him, you would have convinced him to go. It’s unacceptable for him to shirk his duties and turn down assignments for the sake of some flirtation. He has responsibilities, and we have high hopes for him. If he continues to disappoint, then he’ll quickly lose his standing. And an outcast hunter doesn’t have a rosy future. Do you really want to risk all that just so that he can spend a few more weeks with you?! Especially when you have so little time to spare anyway.”

I gulp and don’t know what to say. On one hand, I figure Ayden knows exactly what he’s doing. But I’m also aware that he only made that decision because of me. He doesn’t want to leave me alone during this difficult period. But basically it’s true: We’ll hardly get to see each other anyway, and I really don’t want his decision to disadvantage him.

“Talk to him. That’s all I wanted to impress on you. If you really care about him, then I hope you’ll make the right decision.”
