I had to turn it off. All the emotions. All the feelings. Everything that was killing me second by second, or I’d never make it through eating and Raid leaving.
“Yeah. This looks great,” I told him as he sat in the gray chair across from me.
“I’m not a gourmet chef like my brother, but I’m not bad,” he said as I made an attempt to stab a piece of scrambled egg.
“Your brother is a chef?”
He chuckled, another sound I put in my memory bank.
“Not really, but he’s a good cook. Our mom taught us how to cook when we grew up. Always said we needed to know how for when we had women in our lives.”
That feeling was starting to come back. “Women in our lives.”
God, how I wanted to be that. But it wasn’t meant to be. The way he shared these pieces of himself, I could never give him the same in return. The pieces of me were damaged, and this was for the best even if it killed me.
I jolted when a fist pounded at the door. I took the escape and set the plate on the couch and then moved to the door where I looked through the peephole.
Everything around me stopped.
I was too late.
The past had come for me.
“Who is it?” Raid asked as I unlocked the door and opened it.
“Liam,” I whispered low.
“Cami?” his deep voice responded.
“What the fuck are you doin’ here?” Raid barked, making me jump.
Never wanted the present and past to collide, but here they were, right in front of my face exploding around me.
My body had enough, and before I knew it everything went dark…
The end for now
