He frowned. “It’s cold. When were we not in a position to hear anything?”

“Oh. Right.”

He went back to his room and called Tangero. They spoke for a moment, and then he ended the call. “The general had two loyal men on staff, and they fired a mortar shell into your bedroom while we were in the lab. It’s soundproof.”

“Oh. Right. Well, that’s a relief. I thought I would feel something.”

He sighed. “You will. Let’s go get some coffee. Shower later.”

She nodded, and soon, she was having coffee while part of her brain was thinking about the hole in the mansion. She had seen architectural drawings of the house and tried to imagine the layers required to repair it.

Sarah came in and looked at them. “You two are up early.”

Haley snorted. “Get those thoughts out of your head. Monster wouldn’t let me in my room last night, so Jarol let me sleep with him. When we woke up, we found out that someone blew up my bedroom while we were out yesterday.”

Sarah blinked. “You are joking.”

“Nope. Char and smoke. All my stuff is gone.” Her eyes got wide. “All Monster’s cat trees are gone. Oh, no.”

Jarol rubbed her shoulder. “It’s okay. We will fix this.”

“Monster’s stuff was all custom.”

“Right. It will be fine. She can go without it for a few days.”

“Sure. I can see you don’t value your furniture.” She chuckled and was about to get up when pancakes and bacon were in front of her. “Wait, I didn’t see you do that.”

Sarah winked.

She gave Jarol his food, and they ate and then walked outside the building, walking around to the point where her room had been.

They stopped and stared.

The building was healing itself.

“Haley, do you know what is going on?”

She watched stone just appear out of nothing. “Saving on a repair bill?”

He blinked. “Are you doing this?”

“Yeah. I guess so. I mean, I was thinking about it.”

He opened his mouth and was going to speak, but Haley felt a punch to the gut, and her body covered itself in armour. Jarol looked the same. In the distance, at the edge of the woods, a gleaming star of energy was appearing as the space between worlds was being torn open.

Haley extended her hand to slow the entry as they walked to meet the enemy. Instructions on what to do next were filling her mind, and she took a deep breath, dumped energy into Jarol, and ran forward at a full tilt.

Tangero watched the bloody battle ranging from mid-morning into the night. Jarol was taking most of the hits, but his armour didn’t fail him.

The pile of bodies stacking up was slowing the horde from coming through, and Haley was forging toward the rift itself.

It was after moonrise when Haley began shouting and a bolt of light came from her, destroying those in front of her and leaving a sudden silence. It was over. The rift was closed.

She patted Jarol on the shoulder as he panted with exhaustion, and then a peculiar thing occurred. Haley extended her hands and beckoned. The bodies disappeared, and her arms moved to gather something. She looked at Jarol, and they turned back, walking slowly to the mansion.

Tangero looked at his astonished men and said, “Have the housekeeper get them some water or something.”
