“Ready for our date, Little Bird?” He toys with the hem of my dress, making sure it covers my weapons.

“Are you?” I counter. He might hate the woman, but she’s still the only stable parent figure he’s had in his life. I wouldn’t blame him if he had second thoughts.

“I’ve thought about every single way I could murder her every day until I escaped her talons. I’m more than ready.” He stands and tucks my hair behind my ears. “You’re making my dreams come true today, Little Bird.”

“There’s still time to change our plans. Are you sure you don’t want to be the one who does it?” I wrap my arms around his waist, drawing our bodies close.

He bends his head so our lips brush with his every word. “You know nothing turns me on more than watching the pleasure you get from killing.”

Much to my disappointment, he steps away before I can capture his lips in a kiss. The man is hell bent on teasing me today.

“Come on, let’s go downstairs.” He holds his hand out for me to take, lacing our fingers together as we navigate the halls of our mansion. I can’t believe we’ve only been living here for two weeks, and yet it already feels like home. The best part is its proximity to my brother. Far enough from the city for privacy, but close enough to be there if he needs me quickly.

When we reach the ground floor, Jasper squeezes my hand and heads in the opposite direction. I watch as he leaves, his ass filling his slacks is simply perfection. Vander’s arms come around me, molding me to his body. “Seems I’m not the only one who likes to watch, Reginetta.”

My mouth suddenly goes dry with the image that pops to the forefront of my mind. It doesn’t show specifically who the pairing is, but it’s definitely two of them touching, their cocks rubbing together… Yeah, I’d love to watch that, though I don’t see it ever happening.

We shift to face the front entrance, the clear glass door showing a view of the private drive leading to the house. Either side of it is lined with large trees, the branches holding the vibrant green leaves spring is known for. Our property will be an oasis once everything grows in. It’s so large you can’t even see the front gate from here.

Vander moves my hair from my neck, then trails his lips in a line from the base until he reaches that sensitive spot by my ear. The touch is featherlight, sending chills throughout my body.

“Do you know how many times I imagined holding you like this when I was simply your overlooked guard?” I wince, wishing I could refute his statement. But if I’m honest, I didn’t give him any mind until I suddenly did. It was like my first murder opened my eyes to more than just the darkness I hid for so long.

Killing Scott was the best thing I ever did in my life. It changed everything.

The crunch of tires on the gravel driveway alerts us to Stephanie’s—Jasper’s mom—arrival. It’s show time.

Vander and I move to the door at the same time. He opens it and steps outside, standing to the side with his legs spread and his hands folded in front of him. I practically drool at the sight of him in his suit.

I turn my attention to the vehicle as it comes to a stop. Our multi tiered fountain runs in the middle of the roundabout, giving a peaceful splashing sound that I can now hear with the door open.

Stephanie opens her door and smooths her dress before strutting toward us. For someone who’s supposed to be meeting the man she’s gunning to con, she sure is putting on a show for Vander.

“Hello,” I greet her with all the grace I learned to fake during my days as a member of the elite. “My name is Raven, Mr. Astor’s assistant. He’s taking care of a business call, but wanted me to escort you to the garden. A few of our other guests have already arrived.”

Becca used the first rich sounding name that popped in her head when making the profile on a dating site where Stephanie found several of her victims. Obviously, she knew what she was doing since she baited the con artist within three weeks. She used the catfish project as something fun between chasing down TB associates.

“Lead the way, Raven,” she says, but there’s something stuck up in her voice, like she thinks she’s better than me.

“I hope you don’t mind, but Mr. Astor’s head of security must pat down every guest before they enter.” I use my hands to usher her toward Vander. When she’s done, we step inside and I once again guide her toward another hoop she has to jump through. “Your belongings will remain safe in our coat check.”

“Oh, that’s alright. I’ll keep it on me.” She clutches her purse against her side.

“I’m afraid I must insist.” I give her a sympathetic frown.

Stephanie pushes her lips together so hard it looks like an asshole. “I’ll leave it in my car then. I don’t trust the household staff around my things.”

“That is well within your prerogative,” I say, doing my best not to bust out laughing. “But you will have to get patted down again.”

“Oh, for heaven’s sake. Is all this really necessary?” She seems fed up and we haven’t even gotten to the fun part yet.

“I’m only following my instructions, ma’am.”

She growls and stomps her foot in a fit of outrage before shoving her purse in a cubby in the front closet. Whoever owned the mansion before us seemed to enjoy hosting.

“Happy now?” Stephanie snaps. If I didn’t already hate her with all the burning inferno of the sun, then I’d be plotting her murder by now. And I’ve only now met her in person.

“If you could follow me. I’ll take you to the garden.” Turning on my heel like her jibes haven’t touched me, which is true, I take her through our house, making sure she gets an eyeful of Jasper’s weapons room. He has his collection hanging on the walls like art on display. When her footsteps stutter, I hide my smile behind my hair.
