I rack my brain, but nothing comes to mind. If I don’t remember telling him, it’s a wonder he does.

I swear these alphas impress me more and more every single day.

His hand drops to mine as he threads our fingers together. “Come on, let’s go.”

The smell of the library is intoxicating. If I’d met an alpha who smells like printed paper, I’d probably have to make him mine on that fact alone. But alas, I didn’t and I love my desserts a lot more.

As we enter, Kyle pulls me closer, and I can feel the warmth of his body through his shirt. A long wooden table sits in the middle of the library, surrounded by chairs as old and ornate as the books themselves. The rest of the room is lined with wooden bookshelves, crammed with leather-bound volumes and dusty tomes, their spines bent from years of use.

I shiver with anticipation as we roam the aisles, my fingers trailing over the spines of the books. I have no idea what Kyle has in store, but I’m eagerly awaiting whatever it is.

Kyle stops suddenly as he catches sight of a particular title. “What is it?” I ask, peering around him to see what grabbed his attention. His finger traces over the spine of a book that seems newer than the rest.

I squint to read the title. How to Take Care of an Omega. An Alpha’s Guide to a Happy Life.

A chuckle escapes me as I look back at him and see the excitement in his eyes. “Want to check it out?” he asks, his voice low and husky. “Maybe it’ll have some good pointers.”

My expression grows serious for a moment. “You don’t need a ‘how to’ manual to care for me. You know that, right?”

He spins me around to face him, placing his hand on the small of my back, exactly where I like it. “I know, Peardrop. But it does make me feel like I’m doing something right to hear you say it.”

As I pluck the book out and thumb through the pages, I find things like “What to Expect When a Heat is Coming Up,” and “How to Help Ease an Omega into a Nest.”

“Huh. This seems like something they should’ve had some of the others reading before joining the show.”

Kyle snorts. “You can say that twice. Is there anything in here you’d like to read, Peardrop?”

I shake my head. “Haven’t seen anything yet, but then again, I could probably get lost in a place like this and never be seen again.”

He raises an eyebrow at me. “This library is nothing compared to the one we have back home.” His expression softens. “Maybe I’ll get to take you sometime.”

“I would love that,” I respond sincerely. “While my Kindle is amazing, sometimes you simply need to feel paper in your hands, you know?”

He runs a hand through his hair, suddenly seeming self-conscious. “Actually, I don’t read much.”

A gasp escapes me. “Really?”

“Yeah, but maybe I haven’t been reading the right ones.”

“Hmm. Well, see anything in here that piques your interest?” I ask.

“Actually, there is something...” he trails off and turns, heading back to the first case we passed before grabbing a book from the shelf. “Now, you pick one and we’ll compare.”

Once I’ve grabbed something I think he might like, he leads us over to the long table before pulling a chair out for me. I sit, admiring the room around me for a moment. I feel at home here, surrounded by knowledge and stories waiting to be discovered.

He takes the seat next to me and rests his hand on my leg, brushing his thumb over my knee. “You already seem happier, almost freer in a way without the spotlight on you. I’m glad to see you smiling so much.”

Like his words make it appear, a grin splits my lips. I’m grateful for his understanding and support. “So, what’d you pick?”

“Well, like I said, I don’t read much. However, this is one of my favorites,” he says, handing it to me.

I take it from him and examine the cover, the title almost illegible from years of wear and tear. Someone else certainly loved this book too. “What’s it about?”

“It’s a love story,” he responds, his eyes shining with emotion.

I can’t help but feel his choice of book says a lot about him, and now I’m dying to know the contents of what’s inside. “Think they’ll care if I take it back to my suite? I read fairly fast, but I want to delve into its depths.”

Kyle squeezes my knee, so many emotions flashing behind his eyes. “I can’t imagine they would mind.”
