“New project?” I ask, peering down at what looks like to be a mood board for a kid’s room.
It’s all monochromatic with splashes of yellow, bright blue, and green. Fresh and vibrant.
“Yeah,” she says with a slight gasped hiccup at the end, taking the glass of wine I offer her.
Summer places it carefully in the tray in the middle of the large desk. There’s already a cup of her current favorite herbal tea, along with a tall glass of water.
“You feeling crappy again?” I know that she wasn’t feeling great earlier this week, but she seemed better when she left this morning.
Looking up at me with a nod, she taps the board in front of her and asks, “Do you like it?”
“It’s pretty…not too different from what you did with East’s room.”
“I wanted to keep things similar and fluid. You know me…I like to keep things coordinated.” She pauses, her eyes meeting mine as though she’s waiting for me to pick up whatever she’s just put down.
It takes me a moment too long to go over what she said before it hits me. “Are you serious?”
“Yes.”
“And you’re sure?”
“The hoard of pregnancy tests I’ve taken seem to be. Add the fact my period is a no-show and I had that weird spotting last month…and the doctor is pretty certain that I am too.”
The steady thrum of my pulse picks up to a gallop. I’m trying to catch my breath as I look down at the mood board on the desk.
“Are you okay?”
“What if it’s a girl?” I ask, noticing that there isn’t a single hint of pink or girlier colors.
“Does it matter?”
“Well, you’re girly, and you love bright colors… I love the idea that maybe we have a mini you.”
Letting out a deep breath, she collapses into me. “Fuck me, for a moment…”
“We discussed this, Sum.” Perching on the stool behind me, I put my glass down beside hers and pull her onto my lap. “I told you that if you’re ready to try, I’m all in. You’re my sexy as fuck wife, and we’re a family.”
“Still, it’s a big step, and as ready as I am…as much as I want it, I’m so nervous. Do you know how many complica—”
Silencing her worry with a kiss, I lift her onto the edge of the desk. My hands instantly trail up to anchor on either side of her flat belly as I pull away slightly and tell her, “I got you, baby.” I nip the tip of her nose.
“We’re going to have another kid,” Summer whispers.
“You know what that means?”
“We’re having a baby, Parker.”
“Ummm…yeah! But that’s not what I was hinting at.” Dipping my head, I lower my face to her thighs.
“Oh,” she breathes as I kiss a trail on the inside and her legs spread wider for me.
My hands grasp the loose skirt of her dress, hitching it higher so that it ruches at the bottom of her stomach, a gorgeous ripple of light yellow silk that makes the light freckles on her skin stand out.
