SUMMER

The past couple of days, we’ve fallen into a bit of a routine with all of my late shifts. Once Easton is in bed, I’ve headed up to Parker’s after I’ve finished work.

Knocking on the door, I jump when Parker opens it almost immediately. The mouthwatering smell of cheese hits me, and I have to hold back a moan.

“Hey,” he says, pulling me in for a kiss that almost has me forgetting about the food.

“Hey yourself, handsome.” I move into the room, and he locks the door behind me before motioning to the kitchen.

“I thought you might like something other than takeout. So I made chicken and potatoes.” Following him to where he’s dished up, my heart squeezes at his thoughtfulness. He hands me a glass of wine. “Have a seat. I’m almost done.”

Slipping my heels off, I take a sip of the wine and sit on the sofa, watching him work. His white shirt molds to his body like a second skin, and I admire every inch of him.

Once he’s done, he brings us both a plate and sits beside me.

“Did you get your results back on your last assignment?” he asks as he takes a bite.

“Not yet. Hopefully tomorrow. How was your day? Did you and East have fun?”

“Not really. We went to the park, but he was really fussy. I think he’s teething. He’s been out of sorts all afternoon. Poor guy.”

“Oh no. Did you want me to head home after this? If he’s not well…”

“No, it’s fine. He’s had some medicine and is fast asleep now. That’s what he needs. Probably just exhausted.”

We talk about anything and everything over dinner, and once we’re done, I insist on loading the dishwasher. He cooked, I clean.

Before long, we’re on the couch, and I’m straddling Parker, reveling in the taste of him. His kisses imprint on my soul. He holds me close, his hands squeezing my ass as I writhe in his lap. The moans filling the air are a mix of mine and his, both of us lost in the sensations.

His deft fingertips slip under my top, sliding up to finger the edge of my lacy bra. Just as he slips his finger inside the flimsy cup, the baby monitor sounds. East’s cries echo in the room, and I pull back, startled.

Fuck.

“I need to go check on him,” he says apologetically as I move off him. Dad mode has been activated, and he jumps up. I nod in understanding, smoothing my top back down and touching my swollen lips.

“Of course. I really should head home anyway.” Standing abruptly, I look for where I put my purse.

I need some air.

“You don’t have to…”

Leaning up to press a chaste kiss to his lips, I cut him off with a forced smile.

“Go make sure East is okay. He needs you. We’ll talk tomorrow.”

He nods before rushing off to check on Easton, and I make my exit.

As soon as I’m outside the hotel, I lean against the wall and let the cool air wash over me. My head is a mess of emotions. I don’t know how I’m feeling.

Opening my purse, I grab my phone and dial Rosie.

“Hey, babe! How’s it going?” Rosie’s animated voice comes on the line and makes a little of the tension in my chest leave.

“What am I doing, Ro?” I ask down the phone, trying to contain my rising panic.

“Having a good time,” she answers as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world and knowing what I mean instantly.

“He’s a dad. He has a son.” God, what if East had seen us? The poor boy is sick, and I’m there trying to climb his daddy like a tree.
