“Yeah, um…s-so...” His focus was trained on her face, but he was resisting looking down at her chest again with great effort. She resisted the urge to laugh.

“What’s up?”

He blinked and glanced over his shoulder and then back to her. “Just wanted to make sure you knew about the game tonight. I’m starting, and it should be a good one so...” His voice tapered. “You gonna come?”

“Football?”

He nodded. “Yeah, playing our rival. Everyone’s heading over after the potluck. Didn’t know if Dad mentioned it.”

Caden hadn’t, which left her wondering if he didn’t want her to go. From the eager grin on Trevor’s face, it was obvious he wanted her there. She knew nothing about football and had never had an interest before, but there was something in Trevor’s eyes that made her blurt, “Yes, I will definitely be there.”

He jerked back, a grin forming on his face. “Yeah?”

She nodded.

“Cool, okay, I gotta go. Dad will kick my ass, I get one more tardy.” He turned and hurried down the steps. He threw up his hand. “See you tonight.”

She chuckled at his excitement and then stopped and stepped out on the porch. “Trevor, what number are you?”

He spun around, confusion marring his eyes. “Sixty-four. Why?”

She shrugged. “Gotta know who I’m cheering for.”

Trevor laughed. “Yeah. Later, Riss.”

She watched him jog through the gates until he disappeared around the house. She hadn’t been to a high school football game since she was a student. The final percolating of her coffee caught her attention, and she walked back into the apartment.

She hadn’t realized she left the door open until she heard his voice.

“Hey.” Caden was standing a few feet away watching her. She smiled and lifted her hand in a short wave. He leaned against the doorframe. “Guess the kid’s got more manners than I do, huh?”

“What?”

He jerked his head over his shoulder. “Asking you to come to his game.”

“Oh, do you mind if I go?”

The corner of his mouth shot up. “You were already coming, just didn’t think to ask. Doing potluck at five and we’ll head out about seven.”

“Okay.”

He smiled and ducked out of the apartment.

The potluck had been interesting. She walked over at five and surprisingly, was one of the last to show up. All the tenants and employees brought food, everything ranging from appetizers and snack food to entrées. There was a comradery between them all, which had her feeling a bit out of place and staying close to the corner of the room. She didn’t last long in her spot.

The arrival of a few more guests had Marissa leaning forward. Oh shit! She bowed her head and immediately shrank back when she saw the Ghosttown Riders patch on their jackets. From her quick glance, she couldn’t be sure exactly which members they were. It didn’t really matter. While Kase had been the only one to be outright rude, none of them made her feel comfortable.

Caden smiled as he weaved through the kitchen and headed toward her. He grasped her hand, pulling her through the small crowd lined up at the kitchen doorway. She tightened her grip when she noticed Rourke glance over his shoulder, and his gaze landed directly on her. Of all Kase’s guys, he’d been the most intimidating.

“Thanks for coming, guys.” Caden pulled her hand, which forced her to stand directly next to him.

She hadn’t noticed the women who had come in until a short, dark haired woman pushed past Rourke.

“I’m so friggin’ excited. I can’t tell you the last time I went to a football game.” She reached forward, pulling Caden in for a hug. Marissa tried to free her hand, but Caden refused to let go.

He chuckled and settled next to her. “Trevor will be happy you guys came out.”
