“Did Cord not tell you that it was taken care of? I’m sure he would’ve told you that it wasn’t safe for you to go out there on your own. Did you think he was telling you that to hear himself speak?”

“No I didn’t, it’s just…” just what? He made it seem so simple that now I look at it I was being an ass. If that wasn’t bad enough I’d dragged everyone else into my mess with me.

“And you two, what was your part in all this?” Good old Gaby got her blood up. I guess she figured it was best to lead with her own anger at being treated like a child than to play the victim of whatever was coming.

“We were going along for support. We couldn’t just let her go alone, what kind of friends would we be?” I didn’t trust that look he gave her. “Tone.” That one word had her taking a step back and I think we all heard her swallow.

“It’s good that all of you stick together and look out for one another, but when you do it in this context, when you disobey a direct order and put yourselves in danger, what do you think us men who have sworn to protect you should do?”

None of us had any answers and Dani was about to have a heart attack. Connor, Zak, none of the others had said anything as yet and Cord was still in the shadows. Logan turned and looked in his direction before shaking his head with a loud sigh.

“Damn, okay Gabriella take her to the house let me go deal with my brother. And Susie, don’t ever do something like this again. Your little stunt has got all your sisters in a shitload of trouble and you, well, let’s hope the six of us can calm your man down some.” That didn’t sound too good.

CHAPTER 16

CORD

***

We were in the middle of a good laugh, a much-needed one at Lyon’s expense, when the alarms started going nuts. Lo, Con and I looked at our phones at the same time. “Colton we’ll see you in a little bit we got a situation here.” Tyler looked at the three of us questioningly.

“What kinda situation?” He sounded like he thought he could get here in time to handle whatever it was even though he was hours away.

“Nothing to do with this brother. It looks like we gotta go run herd on the women, catch you later.” He muttered something about hardheaded females as the phone went dead.

He’d called Mancini to rip him a new one for siccing the mobster on his ass. It was fun listening to him go on and on about fucktard and whatnot, but once Mancini in his calm way convinced him that it was best for the kids he relented.

Like us he couldn’t just pick up and leave, not for a few days, he had shit to do to make sure things ran smooth while he was gone. He also had to take care of his parents and in laws and the old man we’d met over the holidays in the meantime. But since they weren’t in any imminent danger it was decided to just put eyes on them for now. I’m not sure what they were gonna do about school, but I’m sure between the lot of us we could come up with something.

Then the alarms went and the readout showed three of them outside the same damn gate as before. “How did they bypass the gate alarm?” Quinn fiddled with the comp to pull it up. “They didn’t, someone put a glitch in it. It looks like it’s still on, but it would’ve alerted in the next five minutes anyway.”

“Nessa, had to be. She’s the only one of them who would know how to do that. But she’s still on the grounds.”

“No, she set it up but it’s just our three that left the other two are here.” Connor said as we all headed for the door with Mancini bringing up the rear.

“You boys should be paying me to take you out of here. Your women don’t seem to listen so good.” I didn’t say anything because I was pretty sure who was behind this little stunt.

I guess I didn’t do a very good job of holding the growl in because Connor and Logan cornered me outside the door. “You stay here, we’ll bring her back.”

“Get out of my fucking way Logan.”

“Uh-uh soldier, you stand the fuck down. You know we can’t let you go after her like this and the longer we stand here dealing with you the longer our women are exposed. We’ll bring her back. You four sit on his ass if you have to we’ll be right back.” I didn’t even look at Zak or Ty when they came to flank me, or Dev and Quinn when they took up the rear.

I wasn’t about to show out in front of Mancini, he was still too new and in some part of me I knew that I really shouldn’t get too close to her right now, but I wasn’t happy about any of it.

I waited, holding my breath like an ass until they came back with her. I was moving on pure adrenaline now and knew that too was a dangerous thing. “Cord…” Zak reached for my arm when I walked away from their little power circle. Fuck that.

“Hey you, get your ass inside NOW.” She didn’t move fast enough so I grabbed her nape. “Cord…” I could break her fucking neck, that’s what was going through my head when my brother tried to pull me off her ass.

“Stay out of it Con.” He shook his head but moved aside after a five-minute stare down. They all knew to step the fuck off unless they wanted to make shit harder on her. Unlike Ty and the others, I won’t listen for shit when it comes to my woman. They know me well enough to know I would never hurt her, not physically anyway but I can see where they might be afraid that I’d bruise her heart.

Logan got between the two of us and whispered in my ear. “Not like this brother, you don’t wanna do this now.” He eased her away from me and passed her off to Gaby and Dani, which made me see red. He stepped back with his hands up. Enough to give me my space, but still kept himself between me and her. I moved, he moved.

I put my hand in his chest to push him back as the blood rushed in my ears. “Cord, work with me here.” He stopped pushing, and the fucker knew just the right tone to take to get me out of the zone I was heading into. I’ve never really heard it off the field though. That’s how I knew I was moving into dangerous fucking territory. I looked in his eyes and saw it. Fuck!

“I need a minute brother.” He relaxed when he realized I wasn’t going after her. I just needed to step away for a minute because I had become the danger. That shit didn’t even loosen up now that I knew she was safe. I still wanted to ring her fucking neck.

What if she hadn’t been wearing her tracer? What if the fuckers that were after her had sent in another detail? All of that ran through my head but nothing pissed me off more than the fact that she’d put herself in danger. Not even the fact that she’d disobeyed a direct order, or the fact that she’d put her sisters in danger as well. She had no concept of what the fuck she’d done. I warned her.
