“Cord I’ll be fine, I grew up here, remember!” I didn’t answer her, just gave her my ‘do not fuck with me’ glare. “I mean it Susie, I don’t want to hear shit about you having to go to the store or run an errand, none of that shit. If you need anything you call me.” “Fine drill sergeant I won’t even look out the window, happy?”
“Come here.” Some of the starch went out of her as she made her way to me. Lifting her chin with my finger I studied her eyes. She wasn’t afraid of me one bit, which isn’t what I wanted anyway. But I did want her to understand the consequences of disobeying me in this. Not only because of the danger that she still faced, but what it might cause me to do to her if she put herself in harm’s way.
I’d spent last night watching over her, trying to come up with a solution, anything to get out of having to hand her over to her mom, but by daybreak nothing came to me and so here we are.
“Behave yourself while you’re there.”
“Cord, I’m going home not off to war.” She did the eye-rolling thing that all my sisters seem to have turned into an art form.
“No, you’re going to your mother’s.” She swallowed and watched me warily, not that I needed to explain to her, she knew what those words meant. This is home.
“Davey come here.” I called out to her brother who was standing off to the side waiting. Their mom’s home is just a few streets away and I was about to drop them off there on my way to the construction site that my brothers and I were working on. I wasn’t too happy about letting either of them leave here, not with things still as dangerous as they were, but I had no choice this time.
“Yes sir?” The boy came to stand next to me. I wish his sister was as obedient as he was. But then again, I didn’t want her to lose all of that fire she has. I like her fire. I just need to tame it a little so we can live in peace together. And so her little ass won’t stay bent over my knee.
“Look after your sister while I’m gone. No unplanned trips, and no strangers.” I’d told them both the same thing about ten times in the last few hours once I accepted that I had to let her go. He nodded his understanding without giving me any of the lip his sister was prone to.
My brothers were making their way to their rides so my time had run out. “Let’s go.” I led her to the car and helped her in the back while her brother got in on the other side. Ty was riding up front with me since we had made the decision not to ride alone until things were back on track.
“You kids all set?” Ty looked back at them as I pulled out. I listened to the three of them exchange small talk as I drove out with my other brothers in the truck behind me.
“Susie, call me if you need me.” I told her one last time as I let her out of the car. “I will, stop worrying.” She didn’t seem any more pleased to be leaving me than I was. I pulled her into my arms and held her tight, wishing like fuck that I could fold her up and put her in my pocket, keeping her safe. “I’ll call you later.” I kissed her one last time before letting her walk away.
I watched until they walked inside and closed the door before getting back in the driver’s seat. “I hate this shit.” I almost jumped out and went after her. “This goes against everything I stand for.” I said the words out loud as I fought the burning in my gut.
“Damn, bitch made, she’s just going around the corner. You’re acting like she’s moving out of state or some fuck.” I just gave him a look but that never works with him. “Tell me brother, what do you plan to do when she goes back to school in a few weeks?”
“She’s not going back.” Another fucking headache!
“Say what now?” I could see the beginnings of a grin on his damn face. I knew he was goading me, but there was a bit of seriousness to his question. Fucking Lo or Con probably put him up to grilling me.
“She’s gonna enroll in the local college, that way she can be home everyday.” And I can keep what little mind I have left without worrying about her every second of the fucking day, what the fuck was he on?
“Does she know that?” If he laughs, swear to fuck, I’m gonna knock his teeth down his neck.
“It doesn’t matter, it’s what I want and it’s safest. Would you let Vicki leave?”
“Are you fuck stupid?”
“Well then.”
“But Vicky’s mine.” I knew what he was doing but played along. I knew it was only a matter of time before they came at me.
“And Susie belongs to me.”
“Oh shit.” He didn’t say anything else as we made our way to the job. The others pulled in behind us and when I caught his nod to Lo I knew what was coming. It had taken them long enough the nosy fucks.
Ever since we’d found out that she was the commander’s daughter, the guys’ attitude had changed. She was no longer just a friend, or even just the girl I was interested in. That alone made her special, being the CO’s kid multiplied that shit.
“Wait brother.” Con stopped me, as I was about to remove my tools from the back of the truck. My harsh sigh was the only indication that I knew what they were about. The others surrounded us so that we formed a half circle. The rest of the crew was either already here, and getting started, or now pulling in.
“So, Cord.”
“Lo…”
“This thing with you and Susie.”
“What about it?”
