“Mama and Darius kiss a lot,” Iris tells us, kicking her little feet to the sky before she returns on a downward momentum. “Uncle Fabio, be nice to Kat so she’ll want to kiss you.”

I snort a laugh.

“Kat, do you like Uncle Fabio?” Iris asks.

“Right now? No,” I say unequivocally.

“She doesn’t like you right now,” Iris hilariously relays the message to Fabio.

“I’m getting that,” he comments.

“Uncle Fabio, do you like Kat?” Iris wonders.

“Right now? No,” he parrots.

“He doesn’t like you right now,” Iris says, and it’s not nearly as funny when the message is being relayed to me. “You should be nice to each other. My boyfriend is nice to me.”

I cut Fabio a death glare, mouthing, Don’t say a fucking word. “That’s so sweet,” I tell Iris.

“What’s this boyfriend’s name?” Fabio asks, and I let out a frustrated sigh.

“Iris, let’s show Uncle Fabio how good of a climber you are,” I redirect, hopping out of my swing and slowing hers down by the chains.

“I’m not a professional climber,” she warns Fabio, and I chuckle. “Race you both!” She takes off.

“She’s five. It’s completely innocent. Do not make a big deal out of her saying she has a boyfriend.” I poke him in the chest before taking off after Iris.

Joining her at the money bars, Fabio lifts her so she can reach. “So about this boyfriend—what’s his name?” Fabio asks her, and I throw up my arms in frustration.

The afternoon passes with me watching Iris while pretending Fabio doesn’t exist. I’ve always been good at multitasking.

Thankfully, Darius and Lily soon join us. “Darius, did you know Iris has a boyfriend?” are the first words out of Fabio’s mouth.

“What’s his name?” Darius asks, and I groan.

Fabio

When Darius asked me to keep an eye on Kat and Iris, I eagerly said yes. I just hope it didn’t come off as too eager, as my friend keeps giving me an assessing look.

The girls walk to the parking lot chatting, with me and Darius hanging back. “What do you have for me about John Davis?” he asks.

I run a hand down my face in frustration. “Not much; even with the bounty on John’s head, no one has come forward with legit information. The man’s a ghost.”

“No, the man’s a fucking corpse who doesn’t have the good sense to lay down,” Darius menaces.

“This may or may not be related to our guy.” I relay the information Katerina gave me.

“Inferno? What kind of fucking name is that?” Darius snorts.

“Don’t know. I’m gonna put eyes on Gavin,” I tell him, pretending it has nothing to do with my jealousy. “And I’m gonna put out feelers to see if anyone on the street has heard of this guy Inferno,” I say. “He’s running a huge underground party operation, and even if he’s not connected to John, we need to find him either way. He owes the family for the pleasure of doing business in AC.”

“And Katerina?” Darius asks.

“Got eyes and ears on her; no one has made a move,” I report.

“I’m not trying to sway you, just giving my two cents. The more I’ve thought about it, the more I believe my cousin was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Romeo had already asked Kat to keep her ears open about John; I can’t believe she’d knowingly work for the family’s enemy.”

“Fair point,” I say, having already worked through all the scenarios in my head a million times over.
