Another forced chuckle. I clench my jaw, angry and annoyed at the way Robbie seems to want to gloss over what he did.

“That’s putting it mildly Robbie, don’t you think?” I bite.

When I see him roll his eyes, something inside of me snaps.

Humiliation takes a back seat to the sheer rage bubbling inside of me.

I look at Tyler. “Robbie and I were in a relationship for two years. Until about three years ago, when I went to his place and walked in on him fucking Lena. On my birthday.”

To Lena’s credit, she looks embarrassed and sad. Robbie just looks pissed though.

He glares at me. “That’s pretty classless, Tori. Jesus.”

I let out a bitter laugh. “You’re the one who cheats, and you call me classless. Okay, Robbie.”

I catch Tyler scowling at Robbie.

All the adrenaline inside of me suddenly converges at the top of my chest. It feels like a boulder is lodged at the base of my throat.

I start to feel dizzy, like I’m going to pass out. I grip Tyler’s hand to steady myself.

“I need to get out of here,” I mumble.

He doesn’t say a word. He just wraps his arm around me, leads me past Robbie and Lena, and out some back door I didn’t even notice until we walk through it.

We stop right outside the bar, in an alley. With his arm still wrapped around me, he pulls his phone out of his jacket pocket and taps the screen before holding it up to his ear.

“Hey. Tori isn’t feeling well, so I’m taking her home. Can you and Theo and the guys make sure everyone in the bachelorette party gets home safely? Thanks a lot, Gage.”

He hangs up, tucks his phone back in his jacket pocket, and leads me down the block to where his car is parked.

My head is spinning as he helps me into the passenger seat of his car. He leans over, grabs the seat belt, and buckles me in.

I observe the focused expression on his face, the watchful look in his eyes as he gazes at me.

He led me out of an uncomfortable situation, no questions asked. He made sure my friends were okay. He’s watching over me, going out of his way to take care of me.

Protector.

My whole body tingles.

“That feel okay?” he asks.

I nod. He closes the car door and jogs to the driver’s side. Once he’s in the car, he puts his seat belt on, turns on the engine, and pulls into the busy downtown weekend traffic.

“Thank you, Tyler. For…” I shake my head, overwhelmed at all that he’s done for me tonight, at everything I want to say.

He grabs my hand in his. “No thanks necessary. Just rest, okay?”

I close my eyes, wondering if I’ll even be able to sleep when my entire body is buzzing as I try to process all of my feelings for Tyler.

Chapter 18

Tyler

Iglance over at Tori, sleeping next to me while I drive to her apartment.

Her auburn hair has fallen over her cheek and her chest rises and falls gently with each breath she takes.
