“We could do that here. I can check the weather and if it’s good, I can pull the mattress outside for us to sleep on. We might still need a blanket, but would you like that?”

Her smile tells me more than her words could. “Have you ever been to Pier 59 and ridden the ferris wheel before?”

“I haven’t. It looks so pretty. I bet it’s even better at night.”

“It really is. I’d like to take you. From the ground, it feels so tiny. Once you’re in the air you feel like you’re flying and can see the Needle and the water beneath you.”

She laughs. “I take it you’ve done it before.”

“Yeah. It’s been a long time. Eli was still with Tori.”

“You were here with them? That seems weird.”

“We came out for a hockey game with one of my clients.” I don’t want to ruin this moment. I know my girl. She’s going to ask, then it’s up to me if I tell her the truth and possibly risk her mood.

“Were you alone?”

“No,” I tell her.

“Oh, I thought I might get to be the first at something.”

“You are. I’ve never been here with someone I loved. Isn’t that enough?”

“It is.”

She looks out over the landscape and in the distance we can hear the horn of a boat on the water. “Look, I want you to put everything out of your mind. Let me make this special for you. I can make you breakfast in bed, run bubble baths for you, rub your feet, we can lie under the stars and talk as late as you want. Tell me what you want and if it’s in my power, I’ll make it happen.”

“You don’t have to do all those things. I mean if you want to, I won’t say no.” That gets her to smile a little. “The only thing I want for these four days is to be the only one. I don’t want to hear from or talk about Hannah. I don’t want Gabrielle’s name in anything we do. Give me this weekend like it’s your first time here. That’s what will make me happy.”

“Consider it done, Merlin. This will be a honeymoon without the wedding.”

Hayley belly laughs. The giggles echo all around us. “That sounds like a perfect scenario for you. All milk, no cow.”

I give her my best smirk as I tug her from her rocking egg, pulling her to the floor on top of me. She keeps laughing as she tries to squirm away from my grasp. Hayley eventually gives up to lay kisses over my skin. Her lips are so soft and warm. I feel like I’m finally on ground I recognize and it’s… she’s beautiful.

I didn’t know how this was going to work, me limping along anywhere we went. My husband turns prince yet again. Just outside the front door of our home away from home is a rented scooter. It’s big enough to hold two, in case I’m not able to drive later. When we arrive at the museums at the base of the Space Needle, I have Hayley hop on and we take off.

We’re both laughing the whole time as we weave in and out of the walkers and the boys are running terribly behind. After what feels like a block, we stop and wait for them to catch up. “Are you getting old?” Hayley teases.

“Hey, I wasn’t prepared to be a speed demon,” Eli scolds as he tries to catch his breath.

Wes gets behind Hayley, lifting her off the scooter completely. She lightly thrashes trying to escape his grip, but instead turns her head back to kiss him. We wander first through the Museum of Pop Culture. This place is an absolute blast walking through the beginnings of the Grunge revolution and how it changed the scope of music. We also get to immerse ourselves into hip-hop culture and learn anything we wanted to know about the icon that is Jimi Hendrix.

Next we silently explore the Chihuly Garden and Glass under the shadow of the Needle. It was an experience I’ll never forget. I can’t believe I haven’t been here before now. The four of us seem to go our separate ways completely mesmerized by the delicacy, yet massive sculptures we’re lucky enough to witness.

The last stop on our tour for today is to travel to the top of the Space Needle itself. Our ears pop as we ride the express elevator to the top. Dylan is watching our movement and the ground fade away. Hayley has got one arm wrapped around Wes and the other plastered to the wall of the elevator. “Hey, Kiddo? You okay? You look a little white.”

“Yeah. Yeah. I’m good. I’m good.” The deep breaths she’s taking tell me otherwise.

We arrive at the top and it feels like a whole new world. Wes tried to tell us what it would look and feel like when we got to the top. Nothing he could have said would have covered it. The wind is so much more up here. You can really feel it sway. We all want to take some panoramic pics from outside the walls. Hayley will barely step away from the inside.

“Go ahead. I’m cold. I’m good here.”

“Are you sure, Babe?” Wes asks. “This is sort of once in a lifetime.”

“Yeah. Go ahead. I’m going to sit right here.”
