“Good. That will make this easy then. Hold still.”

“Ow!” Becca said as Kate punctured her with a needle. “You enjoyed that.”

“Yes I did,” Kate said, once she’d collected a sample of Becca’s blood in a small glass vial.

“Can I go now, Dracula?”

“Yes, you may,” Kate said. “I’m going to drop this off at the lab.”

“I hate having a nurse as a sister,” Becca muttered to herself, as she went back into Boomer’s room, holding a little cotton ball over her arm where Kate had stuck her.

Everyone from the MC was now on one side of the room, making space for Doctor Ashburn, who was on the other side of the bed from them, checking Boomer over. Everyone watched expectantly as the doctor went through his examination.

“Can you lift your leg up?” the doctor asked.

Boomer tried, winced, and shook his head. “Nothing.”

“Trying pushing down with your foot, like a gas pedal.”

Another grimace from Boomer. “It’s not… I can’t.”

“What does that mean?” Griz asked.

“It doesn’t mean anything yet,” the doctor said. “This is still very early in the recovery process for an injury like this.”

He took a small, metal, spiky-looking probe and pressed it against the sole of Boomer’s foot, saying, “Do you feel that?”

“Ow!” Boomer said. “Jeesh, Doc!”

“See, that’s good,” the doctor said. “That tells me at least some of the neurology is intact.”

Everyone seemed to relax a bit as the doctor went through the rest of his examination, pushing here, poking there. At last, he seemed like he was ready to give his prognosis. Kate returned and stood by Becca’s side just in time to get the news.

“So overall, some good things, some bad things,” the doctor said. “Obviously, it would be better if there was some muscular activity, but with your sensation being more or less intact, that tells me you have a good chance at walking again. Perhaps even a full recovery.”

“That’s good to hear,” Boomer said.

“But,” the doctor said, “it’s going to be a long time and a lot of therapy. It won’t be easy.”

“It doesn’t need to be easy,” Boomer said. “It just needs to be possible.”

“God,” Becca said under her breath to Kate, “he really is Giant Yoda, isn’t he?”

“I have some news too,” Kate said, once the doctor left. “You should probably step outside with me, Becca.”

“It’s fine, Kate,” Becca said. “What is it?”

“You really should…”

“Kate, just spit it out,” Becca said. “I don’t need to sign a form or something just to have you tell me in front of everyone that I have the flu.”

“Okay,” Kate said. “You’re pregnant.”

Becca blinked. Then blinked again. Then blinked a third time, because the words didn’t quite make sense to her.

“What?” she said.

“Yeah,” Kate said. “Pregnant.”
