We hurriedly helped each other get out of our dresses and pulled the clothes out, black leggings and black shirts.

“The vests too.” Michael said.

I moved to grab one when I was suddenly pushed against the wall. I swung my knife at the assailant, but my arm was blocked and pinned against the wall. I instinctively prepared to bite his arm, only for a strangled gasp to escape me, and the knife slipped from my grasp in shock.

His lips curved into a beautiful smile as his eyes met mine.

“Hi baby.”

I felt my heart stop beating.

I was afraid to even close my eyes or blink, in case this was some kind of an illusion; a beautiful one that I would never get to see if I did.

Had I died, and were we now reunited?

With my shaky hand, I reached out and touched his face. He leaned into my touch, and a sob escaped my lips as tears welled in my eyes.

“Damiano?” I sobbed in a whisper.

“I’m right here, piccola.” He kissed the palm of my hand and pulled me into him.

I cried into his chest, wrapping my arms tightly around him. It was real. He was right here in front of me, holding me tightly in his strong arms as he buried his face into my neck.

My husband is alive.

Damiano wiped my tears away when I had calmed down, his hands cradling my cheeks before leaning down to capture my lips. As our lips touched, the stress and anxiety melted away, replaced by a deep sense of serenity and relief.

I couldn’t breathe.

Only because it filled me with an overwhelming sense of pure joy and love. Our lips met with a desperate intensity, as if our lives depended on that kiss, and my heart raced with a torrent of emotions.

Damiano pulled back slightly and rested his head against mine. It probably wasn’t the right place or time, but I couldn’t care less as I clung to him in desperation.

“I told you; I will always find you, my love.” He whispered.

He always kept his word, no matter what.

“I really thought you had left me.” I sniffed with a fresh wave of tears.

“Never. Not even death can do us part.” Damiano wiped my tears away with his thumb as he caressed my cheek.

“How bad is it?” I asked and looked down to where he had been shot. I lifted his shirt to see, but he was wearing a bulletproof vest underneath.

“It will take more than a bullet to bring your man down.” He smiled softly. “Are you okay? Does it hurt anywhere?” Damiano felt around my body to find any injuries.

“I can’t really feel anything.” I whispered.

“It’s the adrenaline.” His brows furrowed as he examined my face. I was sure it was bruised after being elbowed so hard in the face. “Are you bleeding anywhere?” Damiano’s eyes were filled with concern for me, and I shook my head.

“I’m not.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’m okay.” I cupped his face, and I could feel his entire body relax. “But I’m worried about you.” My voice cracked. He was looking pale and had small beads of sweat on his forehead.
