“Kind of, I guess,” I say, thinking about the time I first met Seth. I’d been in doubt for days whether he was a good person or not.

Erin must be in the same state of mind as me from back then. I’m sure she’s doubting my intentions at this very moment.

I guide her into the kitchen and then, lead her out into the backyard.

My gaze roves over the neighboring houses and lawns. At this time of day, no one’s around to spy on us.

When I’m sure it’s safe, I lead her toward the hedges that lead into Mr. Diaz’s backyard.

Erin stumbles from time to time. I tighten my arms around her, supporting her as we cross the grass-covered lawns.

“Why don’t you let me go now?” Erin says when we get closer to Seth’s car. “I can take care of myself from here onward.”

“You’re too weak to take care of yourself,” I say with a serious expression. “I know you don’t trust me but you’ve got to follow me if you want another chance at life. We’ll get you medical help and take you back home.”

A conflicted look comes into her face.

“Erin, you’ve got to trust me.”

“How can I trust you?” she asks with an anguished look on her young face.

“You might kidnap me and torture me in the same way.”

“I was in the same situation as you are in right now,” I say as my suppressed emotions come to the surface. “I turned my back on my family and decided to trust the wrong guy. Jake sold me to the Black Widow and I suffered as a slave under them for months.”

Surprise flickers in her eyes. “You were taken by the Black Widow too?”

I nod desperately. “That’s why I understand what you’re going through right now. I know it’s hard to trust a stranger. But, you must come with me, Erin. We’ll help you.”

Erin stays silent as she hesitates to make a decision.

“Can it get any worse?” I ask, staring deep into her eyes.

My question shocks her into silence.

“Come with me now,” I say, forcing her to keep walking.

Reaching the car parked outside Mr. Diaz’s house, I open the back door and help Erin climb in.

A familiar lady walks past us with her dog. She looks at me, her expression changing as she recognizes me.

I wait for her to walk by before climbing into the front passenger seat.

“Let’s hurry,” I mutter, glancing at Seth. “I was just recognized by someone.”

His hand closes over mine. “Don’t worry, it’s over now. No one can hurt you anymore, love. I’m taking you home.”

Closing my eyes, I nod and lean against the backrest.

Seth’s familiar rosemary scent washes over me, calming me instantly. A feeling of absolute safety flows through me as he steps on the gas.

It’s a while before I turn around to see how Erin’s doing. “Are you okay?” I ask.

Without meeting my gaze, she silently nods.

“You haven’t made a mistake by trusting me,” I tell her.

Her head whips up as she stares at me.
