“Hey, Bruh,” my brother’s loud, boisterous voice sounds in my ear. “What’s up? When are you getting home?”

“Is Simon with you?” I ask in a grim tone.

There’s a pause. “Yeah, he’s with me,” he says in a more constrained tone.

“Where are you guys right now?”

“We’re both about to head home,” he says. “Why? What’s wrong?”

“I’m being followed,” I say.

“What? By whom?”

“Can’t you guess?” I hiss angrily. “It’s got to be the senator’s men. To be more precise, they’re the remnants of the Black Widow.”

“Shit! Where are you right now?” he asks in an urgent tone. “We’ll go to you right away.”

“I’ll distract these assholes for a while,” I say, weaving aimlessly through the city’s traffic. “That’ll give you guys the time to gather our men and meet me at the pass near Crow Point. Stay hidden until you hear my signal. I want these men to think they have me before we attack them.”

“Got you, Captain,” Oliver replies. “We’ll meet you there within half an hour.”

I stop at a red light as the call switches off. A glance at the rearview mirror shows me the two cars tailing me. Since it’ll take a while for Oliver and Simon to gather forces and reach the meet-up point, I decide to drive through the crowded streets to keep the enemy distracted.

A cold grin curves my lips as they continue to follow me.

My phone chimes with an incoming text about fifteen minutes later. Grabbing my phone, I take a quick look at Oliver’s message.

ETA at Crow Point: 20 minutes

Putting my phone away, I open the glove compartment and bring out a gun as well as a sheathed dagger. Hiding the weapons under my clothing, I change my route.

Soon, I’ve left the city streets and driving through an expressway that leads toward Burton Estate. The traffic thins out steadily. Within minutes, I’m moving through a deserted stretch of the highway.

It’s not long before the cars increase their pace. They hover close to me, intentionally trying to spook me into slowing down or getting slammed by them.

I play their game, allowing them to think they’ve got me in their hands.

My phone rings with another incoming text.

A glance shows me Oliver’s message, telling me they’re in position at Crow Point.

The cars behind me give chase. One of them bypasses me and cuts in front of me abruptly, forcing me to hit the brakes.

My truck comes to a screeching halt. Grinding my teeth, I feel under my jacket, making sure my gun is within easy reach.

Men in black combat uniforms tumble out of the cars and gather before my truck.

“Show time,” I mutter, gritting my teeth.

Pushing open the door, I climb out of my truck and face them.

“What’d you think you’re doing?” I bark, injecting fierce dominance in my voice.

“Grab him!” Someone shouts.

At once, a group of beta militants march toward me. They surround me, leaving me no space to escape their trap.

“Who are you?” I demand, staring at the dark faces that surround me.
