Page 23 of Not My Vampire

“Constantine has a plan,” he continued mysteriously. “A plan that involves not only vampires, but humans as well.”

“What is his plan?” I demanded of him.

“He wants to unite all the vampires under his rule,” he told me.

“I already know that,” I frowned. “Every vampire knows this. Tell me something I don’t know.”

“He wants to clear this place of all humans.” This was something I didn’t know.

“What do you mean clear it off all humans?” I asked, but the question was pretty straightforward. There was only one way someone could do that.

“He knows that King Theodore trusts you,” he continued. “And he is hoping that you would… revert back to your roots, remember who you are and pledge your loyalty to him.”

My brows knitted in a disgusted frown. “I already told him that he’s mad. I would never turn my back on those I love.”

“He thinks that he will awaken the animal inside of you,” he divulged. “That if he keeps you locked up here for long enough, your animal will come to the surface. But I see you’ve been keeping it under control very well.”

“I haven’t fed and I don’t plan to,” I assure him. “Constantine can keep me here for the rest of my life. I would rather die than feed.”

He hesitated to speak again. But he did. “He will use those you love against you. I’ve seen it happen. And… it’s horrible.”

This time, I wasn’t as bold to respond. A knot tightened somewhere deep inside my stomach and that was where it remained. I knew that he would try and use Cass and Lilith against me, to force me to do something I didn’t want to do. The doppelganger was probably just the first step. I feared to find out what the second one might be.

“Do you know that he sent a doppelganger of me to my home?” I asked.

“I do,” he nodded. “He told you that you are controlling it, but the truth is, he can regain control of it if he wanted to, if that suits his plans better.”

“What else do you know of his plans?”

At that moment, the door burst open and two guards entered carrying a tray of food. The guard who was with me immediately bolted backwards. I knew he was very close to being found out. I decided to help him, if it was necessary.

“What are you doing here?” The newcomer addressed him. “Why aren’t you at your designated post?”

I could smell the perspiration dripping from the guard’s temples. His mistake was that he hadn’t come up with a plausible explanation if someone caught him here when he wasn’t supposed to be here in the first place.

“I uhm…” he started, but he sounded way weak, too scared.

“I was banging on the doors,” I jumped in. “I demanded an audience with Constantine.”

The other two guards exchanged a meaningful glance, then the first one scoffed. “You don’t get to demand any such thing.”

“As this guy was telling me,” I assured him. “Now, did you come bringing me more shitty food?”

I looked at the tray and saw that there was moldy meat not even fit for a dog. I laughed loudly before any of them could reply. “Take that shit back and tell Constantine he can do this to me all he wants, but I will get my chance. And when I do, I will wring his fucking neck.”

I said it with such conviction that it made all three guards swallow heavily. The room was filled with tension, but at least, I was able to take the spotlight off of the guard who had come to me offering help. That was what I needed right now, and I couldn’t allow these two guys to ruin that for me.

“Fine,” the newcomer spat back angrily. “Don’t eat. Die. But you won’t talk to Constantine.”

With those words, all three left in a hurry, slamming the door behind them. I listened to the familiar sound of the key in the lock, turning twice. Then, all was silent again.

However, things felt different. I knew now that there was an ally in this hellhole. An ally I could rely on for help, who might actually be able to get me out. After all, he mentioned that he already helped someone before. That gave me hope, a small ray of light which pierced through the darkness that had been surrounding me up until now. The possibility of escape now seemed brighter and more possible than ever.

I had no idea what his motivations were. I also knew nothing of him, nothing of his past, of his secrets, which he must have had, being here, undercover. That meant I still had to be cautious. I couldn’t trust anyone so easily, but at the same time, it was difficult not to. I needed to cling onto something, and now that I had that something, it was hard to let go.

I suddenly remembered the man’s face. That is, the bruise I had gifted him. I hadn’t even apologized for it, nor had he asked for an apology. That same bruise, a stark reminder of our initial confrontation, now stood as a symbol of our alliance. We were no longer on different sides here, but rather on the same one.

I couldn’t help but smile at the unexpected twists of fate. I remembered that there was always a way out, even out of the most dire of situations. One just had to be patient and wait. That was usually the most difficult thing to do. But for the time being, that was needed of me.
