He chuckled. “Wear whatever you want. Bonus points if there’s a skirt.”

“That I can do.” She kissed him again quickly and climbed off his lap before they got too carried away.

Chapter 12

Bex

“Shhhh. The blindfold will come off in a few minutes. We’re almost there,” Aiden’s voice said above the hum of the car engine.

“I grew up in this town. I guarantee whatever restaurant you chose won’t be a surprise. There are like three. Why do I have to wear a blindfold?” Bex asked.

“Because there’s a surprise. I want you to enjoy it. And it’ll be better with the blindfold, I swear.”

“Okay. Why didn’t you say that in the first place?”

Aiden chuckled. “Sorry, next time I’ll lead with that.”

“Next time?”

“Well yeah, I have more than one surprise up my sleeve.” She could hear the amusement in his voice.

“I expect proof of that.”

“Oh, I’ll surprise you. You’ll see.” He made a turn and pulled up a slight incline, then he parked the car. “Stay right there,” he said. “I’ll be right back. No peeking.”

“Fine.” She held her hands up in surrender, curiosity killing her.

He laughed. “Kiss incoming.” He leaned across the car and gave her a quick peck on the lips. One small electric zap later, he opened the car door. “Be right back.” He closed the door, leaving her alone in the car.

She ran her hands over her sundress, smoothing it as she waited for his return. This was her last dress... Her duffle bag only had room for so many.

A few minutes later, he came back and opened her door.

“It’s me, Pixie,” he said. He helped her out of the car and shut the door, then he took her arm and led her over uneven ground that felt like grass under her sandals.

“Where are we going?” she asked.

“You’ll find out in a minute.”

He paused for a minute and she heard a gate creak shut behind them.

He led her across a stretch of grass then helped her sit in a metal chair. She heard him sit in a chair across from her.

“Okay, you can take off the blindfold now.”

She reached behind her head and untied the fabric.

“Oh wow. It’s beautiful,” she said as she lowered the blindfold.

Fairy lights lined the patio in Aiden’s childhood backyard and the sun set in the background, putting red streaks in the evening sky. A white tablecloth covered the patio table where they sat. Lit candles and wildflowers adorned the table, highlighting a bottle of red wine, mason jar glasses, and small plates of salad.

Across the table, Aiden smiled at her. He wore a blue dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and looked sexier than ever in the sunset light. And she couldn’t help but notice his ring was gone.

“How did you put all this together?” she asked.

“Magic,” he said with a laugh. His eyes lit up, and with the mystical atmosphere he’d created in the backyard, she could almost believe him.

“Wine?” he asked, picking up the bottle.
