He saw Bex enter and grinned. He waved from his seat at the table to let her know where to find the band. She smiled and waved an acknowledgment.

Bex squeezed through the crowd in the dimmed club, the dance lights flashing and the music blaring around her. People eyed her appreciatively in her short blue dress, but no one approached her. Bex felt great and the music pulsing around her flowed through her veins and made her want to dance.

She finally reached the stairs to the second floor. The guard smiled and acknowledged her at the bottom. “Haven’t seen you for a while,” he shouted over the music. She knew him from visiting the club regularly, and they had a casual friendship.

“Finished an album! Out to celebrate!” She grinned at him.

A huge smile broke across his face. “Congratulations!” He held a hand out to her, which she took, and the two did a goofy dance with each other, spinning, twirling and having fun.

When he released her, she curtsied, laughed, and thanked him for the dance.

“Anytime, darlin’. Congrats again on the album!” He high-fived her.

“Thanks!”

He stepped aside for her to pass, and she walked up the stairs.

Blake met her at the top. “Why hello there.” He gave her a quick kiss and wrapped her in a hug. His warmth cocooned and comforted her.

“Hey.” She tucked his hair behind his pierced ears and met his hazel eyes. “I missed you. How was your day?”

“Good. Not as good as yours, though. Congratulations!” He grinned, picked her up, and spun in circles.

She squealed, laughing when he sat her on her feet.

He kissed her again softly, with a look the promised more later, then took her hand and led her toward the table. Her other band members — Lyra, Polly and Maggie — were already there.

“Bex!” Polly shouted. “I already ordered your first drink!” She shoved a pink and blue mixed drink complete with an umbrella across the table at Bex.

“Thanks!” Bex slid into the chair beside Blake’s, picked up the glass, and took a sip. “Mmmm, fruity. Good choice!”

“Drink up! We’re here to celebrate!” Polly beamed.

The waitress made her rounds and everyone ordered new drinks, the band sticking with the fruity cocktails and Blake having a whiskey.

Everyone talked and laughed, enjoying the drinks and the company. The drinks kept coming, but since Bex wasn’t much of a drinker, she only nursed two.

After a while, Blake’s arm wrapped around her shoulders and he leaned close. His lips brushed her ear, sending a shiver through her body. “Want to dance?” he asked.

“Sure.” She took another sip of her drink, placed it on the table, and stood. “Be back soon, ladies.” She took Blake’s hand, and he walked her toward the dance floor.

The music pulsed around them as they danced together, their bodies bumping and grinding to the club’s beat as the alcohol buzzed through their veins.

When the song ended, the DJ announced, “I normally don’t do slow songs, but we’ve had a special request. This is for Anita from Jerry. Congratulations on your engagement, you two!”

Random applause and cheers went through the crowd and a slow love song played next.

Bex and Blake tried to slow dance but Bex had a tough time keeping Blake on his feet. The whiskey hit Blake hard and he slumped against Bex’s shoulder more as the evening passed. “Hey babes, where’s the bar?” he mumbled. She somehow managed to maneuver him back into his chair and sat down at her table.

When Blake practically passed out on the table, Bex’s guard friend showed up. “Will you need help getting him outta here?” he asked her, discreetly.

She sighed. “Yes. I’m sorry, I don’t know what got into him.”

“I do.” The guard’s eyes shifted. “Look, I like you, darlin’. You can do better than this guy.” He gestured to Blake. “I don’t want to start anything, but he was here last night... with another woman. Same thing the night before. He’s got a problem with fidelity. I’ll pour him into a car for you, but I hate seeing him with you. I want you to have fun, not get trapped with the likes of him.”

Bex’s heart dropped. “Really?” No one ever said anything about Blake’s infidelity and she never saw anything so she never suspected anything.

The guard’s gaze met hers. She believed him. “Really. This asshole’s not worth your time.”
