“Why?”

“A mob is forming.” She took a bite of her ice cream and walked away.

Aiden jumped up and scurried after her. They tossed the remainder of their cones in a trash can as they passed by. Quickly, they crossed the road to Aiden’s car and climbed inside.

“I’m sorry,” she said, glancing around. No one had followed them.

“About what?”

“Almost getting you mobbed. One was in the works.”

Aiden started his car and pulled onto the road to drive her home.

“Does that happen to you a lot?”

“Yes. Between mass fans and paparazzi, there is minimal privacy. I’m sorry if pictures of our outing end up in the tabloids.”

“I’m not. Sorry, that is. I don’t care if we end up in the tabloids. Don’t apologize for your life.”

“If they find out who you are, you’ll lose all privacy. I’m serious.”

“Let’s hope they stick with ‘unnamed friend’ in that case. It’s okay. I know you didn’t ask for the attention. It isn’t a big deal if I end up in a tabloid or two. We’re only friends. They’ll lose interest fast.”

Since the opportunity opened, she had to say something. She put her heart out there. She sucked in a deep breath. “I’ll be your friend if that’s all you want, but I have to ask — do you have any interest in being more than friends?”

Aiden drew in a sharp breath and slowly released it. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel.

“I wish I could, Bex. I’m sorry. All I can offer is friendship.”

“Oh.” Did he have a girlfriend? A wife and kids somewhere?

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“It’s okay.”

He pulled the car into her parents’ driveway and shifted to park.

She leapt out of the car. “Good night, Aiden,” she said and slammed the door.

“Bex!” he shouted. He leaped out of the car, but she was in the house before he had a chance to catch her.

A short while later, he texted her.

Aiden: I’m sorry. I wish things were different.

Bex: I’ll be just your friend, but please give me a little time.

Aiden: I know it doesn’t make a difference, but I would “be more” with you if I could

Bex: Not helping

Aiden: I’m sorry

Bex: Me too

Aiden: Sleep well
