“No, he …” Mabel covered her lips with their joined hands.
“I am your other half, Lucy. I know what love looks like, and Leo loves you. Has from the first moment I met him.”
“When he kissed you?” Lucy smiled. It had been a long time since there had been a wrong twin kiss in the house.
“When he kissed me and looked at me in such disappointment and confusion. Disappointment that vanished when he saw you. Then he lit up and nearly ran to you.”
“He didn’t run.”
“Maybe not, but he could tell us apart before he even knew I existed. And he was willing to fight for you without even knowing why. He’d protect you from everyone and everything. I knew he loved you then, and I loved him because of it.”

Maby, touched her cheek. “Months ago, when you were trying to knock some sense into me about Cliff, you said that Cliff was my Lucy. That I needed that touch of wild in my life. At the time I thought that you were full of it, but it’s true. I love that he’s always doing the unexpected and keeps me on my toes. He never lets me get boring and stale. I thought that you needed someone like me: boring and laid back. But in reality, you need someone like me, someone who loves unconditionally and has your back, no matter what. Leo does that.”
“He will never forgive me.”
“He will once you forgive yourself. Can you do that?”
“No,” Lucy admitted the truth, there was no forgiving herself for hurting Amelia.
Mabel rested her forehead against Lucy’s. “I forgive you, even if you can’t. And I will be here as long as you need me to be here. Because you are my Lucy.”
“Maby, I—”
“My Lucy,” Maby said softly and stared into her eyes.
Looking into her twin’s eyes, she wondered if Maby was right. Did Leo love her? Probably not back when Maby said he did, but by the end? When they were happy?
Lucy watched as Maby’s blinks got longer and longer, until she stopped opening her eyes. Then she followed her sister into a dreamland where nobody thought she was capable of hurting anyone.
