Chapter Twenty-Three

After one fullday of bed rest, she moved to the couch for the second day of rest. The bedroom got old fast and Lucy needed out. Once moved Lucy was feeling okay with her situation. Leo had been attentive all day, bringing her stuff she wanted and even carrying her to the bathroom once. After that, she insisted she go alone. It was too much.

After work, Sera brought over a pot roast dinner that Harper had made for them. Harper stayed away per Leo’s instructions but made sure they knew she would send something over every day until Lucy was on her feet.

To her delight and amazement, Leo sat with her and watched movies from her teen years, the ones she and Mabel had on DVD and watched over and over again, so they knew every line. They were still as good and witty as she remembered.

She was sure Leo didn’t see them the same way she did, but she did her best to explain why they were good. Maybe she talked too much, but she was trapped on the couch, while he could’ve left at any moment. But he stayed all day and pretended to be interested.

“Which movie did you like best today?” she asked from her spot leaning on a pillow. He was rubbing her feet and not enjoying the latest movie on teen angst.

“The second one, with the blonde girls and the guy,” he answered, running a hand over her shin.

“That’s what they all were, Leo. I love Ten Things I Hate About You. It’s one of my favorites.”

“It was good,” was all he said.

“You don’t even know which one that was!” She sat up quickly, too quickly, because Leo shot her a look.

“I do too. It was the one with the cute blonde,” he argued, turning to her.

“All blondes are cute, Leo. It’s a blonde thing.”

“Then I love this one best since she’s a brunette.” He pointed at the screen.

“Ha, you didn’t like any of them.” She burrowed deeper into the couch, tucking her toes under his butt.

“I liked that you liked them, that they made you happy.” He placed his hand on her upright knee.

“I bet you like a good action flick, with fighting and sex everywhere.” She pouted at his taste in movies.

“Really? Do you know how much sex I watched today? Your movies are full of it!” he argued, making her laugh.

“Teen sex is different than action movie sex. More feelings, less action.” She knew this wasn’t really a conversation she wanted to have with her fiancé she hadn’t had sex with, nor was she planning to.

“Did we even watch the same movies?” Leo asked.

“I saw nary a nipple today.” She folded her arms.

“But enough hints that they were there to last a week. I learned more things to do with your clothes on than I remember from high school.” Leo leaned back on the couch and winked at her.

“High school is way better in the movies,” Lucy agreed, leaving the heavy petting comment alone.

“College too.”

“I wouldn’t know. Never went.” She sat up and put her feet on the floor, getting tired of this conversation.

“You should have gone. You would have liked it,” Leo said, looking at the screen again.

“I didn’t have the grades.” She got up and headed for the bathroom, bedroom, anywhere away from college talk.

Leo let her go. He was starting to clean up the dishes they had on the coffee table. Turning, she went upstairs, knowing he would be mad that she climbed them herself, but wanting to go to bed.

Without thinking, she went to his room, knowing her stuff would be there. And it was. After washing her face and brushing her teeth, she changed into an oversized T-shirt that she always wore to bed, guessing her mom had packed it for her. She climbed into the bed she would share with Leo for two years.

Pulling the covers to her chin, she wondered how she was going to not get attached to him. He had just spent ten hours on the couch with her, even though he hadn’t liked her movie picks. He was sweet and funny, and she was having a hard time keeping her hands off him … or her heart safe from him.

Because even if they hadn’t had sex, she was falling for him. Or maybe it was because she hadn’t had sex with him that she was falling for him. Oddly, their relationship was the longest one she had ever been in. They had known each other for months, had kissed only a handful of times, and were getting married soon. Her usual relationship was kiss twice, have sex, then try and make sex into something more and not getting it right.
