Chapter Fifteen

Since she wasup at 4 a.m., she decided to head home after taking time to gather up all the stained clothes and make a batch of muffins that she left for them to bake when they got up. Today she had to go dress shopping with her mom and sisters, and she was not looking forward to it.

After four times into the shop, she knew what to expect, and it was going to take all day. Nobody would be satisfied until she had tried on at least twelve dresses, and then they would pick the first one.

The house was empty when she got there, but people would soon be arriving, so she headed up to her room. After slipping off the green shirt Leo had given her to wear, she missed his scent immediately. Without thinking, she sniffed the balled-up shirt before tossing it into the laundry. She was losing it.

Another night she had slept beside him, but this time he was everywhere. His smell surrounded her, and she had woken up in his arms. Not a bad way to wake up.

When she had decided to become his wife, she had also decided to not sleep with him. Within a few weeks, he would cheat, and she would be just another notch on his headboard, and be there watching it happen while helping him raise his kids.

When she had been cheated on before, she had been able to walk away from the relationship, but this time she had to stay for two years. Then she would have to watch the parade of women in his life, and there was nothing she could do about it. If they didn’t sleep together, she hoped it wouldn’t be as bad.

After changing into leggings and a gray sweatshirt, she headed down to pretreat all the stains she had caused the day before. But it was worth it to see those kids laughing and teasing each other. It was something she was sure they missed. They didn’t spend all that much time together, and Aubrey was already an adult.

With everything waiting to go in the washer in an hour or so, she headed upstairs to find Harper, Buzz, and Sera bringing food into the kitchen. Grabbing Buzz’s load, the redhead smiled and went back for another. They always brought more food than was needed.

Within minutes, Harper was getting things ready and had both ovens preheating. She didn’t even turn around to ask, “No fiancé this morning?”

“No, I just got home a few minutes ago.” Take that, Harper Hawthorn! No way was she saying she hadn’t planned on staying overnight, although that might’ve worked in her favor also. She just couldn’t say she fell asleep watching TV.

“Poor Agatha. She has to be in the house alone. Maybe she should get roommates,” Sera said.

“She does not want roommates.” Agatha walked into the room. Her hair was a mess, and she was still in her pajamas.

“But when Lucy moves out, you will be lonely,” Buzz said.

“No, I won’t. I’ll be fine.” Agatha sat down next to her mom.

“Maybe Lucy’s man can move in,” Harper said sarcastically.

“He already has a house and four kids. Agatha does not want that,” Lucy told her.

“No, she doesn’t. Keep your sex and kids away from me,” Agatha said. “If nothing is ready, I’m going to take a shower.”

The rest watched her go, and Sera asked, “So, are you going to keep working after you marry your boss?”

“Yes, I am. Maybe in a while, I’ll see if there’s anything else I want to do.” It wasn’t something she had recently thought of because all she really wanted to do was be a caterer. And only then with her sister.

“But you love being a personal assistant,” Harper stated as if she were telling Lucy it was true. Like they had ever talked about it or talked at all since they quit working together.

“Yeah, I like it.” She lied. She didn’t want to go into how hard it actually was. She had enough emotions swirling around in her head, and she didn’t need any more.

“I made a list of things that have to get done before the wedding.” Sera slid an open little notebook her way.

Glancing down at it, she pushed it back at her stepmom. “You can take care of it.”

“No, Lucy, it’s your wedding. How does it look? Am I missing anything? It’s been months since I’ve done one of these, but I think I can still plan one in my sleep.” She pushed the notebook back at her.

Lucy picked it up and looked at the words. Nothing made any sense to her. In fact, she knew her mom had written it all in cursive, a language Lucy had never been able to decipher. Biting her lip, she just looked at the paper.

“I will be fine,” she mumbled, still looking at the paper.

“Lucy, what’s wrong?” Sera turned to her in concern.

“I can’t read this.” She tossed it on the table in anger as angry tears burned the back of her eyes.

“Of course, you can, Lucy. You have a diagnosis. You’re better,” Harper said, dropping her potholder on the counter.
