Lucy got up and said, “She’s right; we don’t look alike.”

Both were lying to him. He was having a hard time telling them apart unless he looked at their shirts, and they looked nothing like anyone else in the room.

“Leo Montgomery,” Lucy said, “The redhead is Bea. I look like her. The blonde one cooking is Harper, and Mabel looks way more like her than me. Agatha has black hair and a black soul to match. Sera, my mom, is eating a pork chop as if she hasn’t eaten in weeks.”

Everyone waved at him as Lucy said their names. Nobody made it seem odd he just came down the stairs or just kissed the wrong person, nor that the woman she just called mom wasn’t a decade older than she was.

“Violet is the little one, and Emma is the sulking teen.” She finished with the introductions. The last three kind of resembled each other.

“Hello.” He didn’t know what else to say.

“Hi, Leo,” Harper replied from behind the counter. “Do you want a muffin or pork chops?”

“Muffin,” was all he could say as the group studied him.

With a knowing smile, Bea handed him a plate with a muffin on it. “So, Leo, what do you do?”

“He’s her boss.” Mabel, the twin, informed her sister.

“Boss sex! It has been a while for that one, hasn’t it, Harper?” Agatha shot at her sister, who was pulling something from the oven.

“Shut up, Agatha!” the blonde said from in the oven.

“You and Lucy should talk a little about that one.” Bea laughed as her sister stood up and scowled at them all.

Leo took his muffin and sat at the table across from the sullen teen, just like at home. He let the conversation go on around him. Lucy sat down next to him, but she wasn’t eating anything. Maybe she had already eaten.

He was starting to worry that Lucy wasn’t liking being teased. It worried him that her sisters weren’t noticing that she wasn’t liking it. So far, she had not joined in on any of it. Even the smile she had on her face when he came into the room was completely gone.

“Quit teasing Harper, girls,” Sera scolded the others. “Can I have another pork chop, Harper?”

“Really, Sera?” Bea demanded from beside her.

“Hey, I’m hungry and pregnant. I deserve another serving,” Sera replied to the redhead as another plate was handed over to her.

“So am I, but I’m restrained,” Bea stated, pushing her empty plate away from her.

Leo looked at the two women who were not even showing one bit yet, then back at Lucy, who wasn’t showing either. Maybe she wasn’t eating, and that was why she stayed thin. Either way, she was clearly not telling them today she was pregnant, even though now was the perfect time. Lucy remained silent beside him with her toes tapping, but nobody noticed.

Sera eyed Bea. “Just wait, Buzzy. It’s coming.”

“Did you want a muffin, Lucy?” he asked quietly, and her brown eyes swung back to him.

“No, I’m fine. Thanks.” She put her hands on the table and started tapping against the wood.

“I think you need something,” Leo commented, hoping only she could hear.

“Don’t worry, Leo. Lucy no longer eats what I make. Agatha says she eats later in the morning.” Harper tossed something in the sink that made a loud clatter.

“It’s not like that, Harper. I’m just not hungry in the mornings like I used to be,” Lucy told her sister.

“You mean you won’t eat what I make anymore. You know I get up early to bring food over here, and you haven’t made anything in months.”

“I know, I just don’t feel like making anything.” The tapping had stopped, and he could tell she was looking beyond her sister, not at her sister.

“Let her be, Harper. She has company,” Mabel said from the counter. Her eyes were definitely giving Harper a warning.

“Company? Really, Luce, are you going to start that again?” The blonde wasn’t letting up today as she rounded the counter for the first time.
