Chapter Eleven

Yesterday Seraphina had beenout of the office for the entire day. Harrison had heard through the grapevine that she was interviewing Kylie Nash in the morning but hadn’t heard why she would be out the entire day. Aspen Andrews was back by lunch.

Maybe he was naive to think his shorter interview was the norm. Since she already had an opinion about it him, it wasn’t hard to figure out why she would make the interview short.

Even if his interview had been short, he had learned so much about the woman he thought he knew. Their lives seemed to mirror each other in that they married young and stayed married for a lot of years. Both marriages seemed to have ended badly. Though her answers were short, they were telling.

But what nagged him was her sleeping with someone at the office. She had been there for a long time and had admitted to cheating on her ex, so it could have been anytime during the twelve years she had been there. And it could have been with anyone from the mailroom to the partners’ offices. Did they meet here or outside of work?

Spinning in his chair, he headed to her office to see if she would update him on his case after all the interviews she had conducted. Maybe she had more than Kylie to speak to yesterday, but then why send Aspen back to the office alone?

From down the hallway, he saw her door was open, so he headed down to see her. At her doorway, he saw her blonde head bent over a file on her desk. Even from the door, he could see it was yellow. Her pen was busy writing, then she stopped suddenly, tossed down her pen, and started typing on the computer.

Rapping his knuckles on the doorframe, her head snapped up and looked at him in question. He could tell she didn’t want anyone to disturb her.

“You’re in today.” The words were out of his mouth before he could stop them. It was a stupid thing to say.

But she just grinned. “Yes, all day. Yesterday I had some things to take care of out of the office.”

Harrison walked into the room since she seemed like she was in a good mood. “How did the interview go?”

“Sorry, Harrison, but I can’t talk about that with you.” Her smile dimmed slightly.

He tried not to be mad at her since it was her job. But for some reason, he wanted her to believe him.

“Okay. How was your day then?”

“Just an afternoon with friends. One had a birthday, so we went out to celebrate.” She shrugged.

“Are you hungover, Sera?” He asked with a grin. She didn’t look like it.

“No, Harrison, I’m not.” She was actually smiling back at him. “I was yesterday.”

“Were you able to stay dressed during your night out?” He wanted to see if he could embarrass her about it.

“I can’t remember,” she answered. Not even a hint of embarrassment from her.

“Must have been a good night.”

“It was.” Still, she didn’t go into it, though it seemed like she wanted to. “But I need to get these progress reports done.”

With that, he was dismissed for the day. No more details about her night of drinking or about her findings the day before. He got up and walked out without saying goodbye, which was okay since she didn’t either. The bitch from HR was back.

Back in his office, he sat down in his chair, stared out his window, and tried to think about something other than Sera Lovely. Except all he could think about was her out on the town so drunk, she couldn’t remember what happened the next day. It seemed so out of character; the woman he thought he knew wasn’t who she really was.

Was it possible that the real Sera Lovely was the one in the bar, the one willing to take her shirt off? Not the one that was following and enforcing rules every day here?

Could he have known her for years and not have known her at all?

Was he just now learning who she actually was?

Was he liking her more and more the more he learned about her, the more she let him in?
