“What if I don’t? What if it doesn’t work?”

Agnes shrugged. “Then we’ll adopt.”

“I want to carry this child.”

“I know. I want that too. There’s every indication that the procedure will go well. Let’s try not to worry about the worst for now. If the worst does happen, we have other options, but for now, let’s be hopeful.”

“Yeah. I can do that.” Cora took Agnes’ hand and squeezed it. “Okay, I’m ready. Let’s go.”

Agnes drove them to the fertility clinic. They had gotten a call from the doctor yesterday saying that he had successfully fertilized Cora’s eggs with the sperm from their chosen donor. Now, it was the simple matter of getting the embryo to take in Cora’s uterus.

Simple in theory, at least. In practice, things were rarely so simple. Agnes parked, but Cora made no move to get out of the car.

“You’re worrying. Stop it.”

“I can’t help it.”

“Just focus on one step at a time. Don’t rush ahead. Let’s just see how this goes.”

She got out and came around to the passenger side, raising one eyebrow. “Don’t make me carry you.”

“Show off,” Cora muttered. “I know you are super strong and everything, but you’ll never be able to lift me and certainly not if I’m pregnant!”

Agnes loved the fact that Cora was bigger and stronger than her, even if she was lazy with her training.

She took Agnes’ hand and let herself be drawn from the car. Dr. Foster was waiting for them at Forest Vale fertility clinic. She was the very best in her field. gave Cora a reassuring smile. “Welcome. Please, come this way.”

Cora knew the procedure, but having it done on her was different. She held Agnes’ hand tightly as Dr. Foster worked. It was uncomfortable but not painful. Though she knew that the process took less than ten minutes, it felt much longer than that.

“Agnes, distract me.”

“Hm, a distraction, let’s see… Well, I’m going to be taking very good care of you over the next nine months. I won’t let you out of my sight!”

“Agnes! I’m going to be pregnant, not an invalid.”

“Nevertheless, I will take the best care of you—and of our child.”

Cora liked the sound of that. “Do you think it’ll be a boy or a girl?”

“Who knows? Certainly not us, at least for a while.”

“Yeah. You know, I had some ideas for baby names.”

“Getting ahead of ourselves, are we?”

Cora shrugged. “I can’t help it. I’m excited.”

“And we’re all done.”

Talking to Agnes had made the time go faster than Cora had expected. “Did it work?”

Dr. Foster gave her an indulgent smile. “The procedure went well, but we will need to check in a couple of weeks to be sure.”

Cora knew this, of course. She was letting her excitement get ahead of her again.

“Come on, love. Let’s go home and celebrate.”

“We don’t know if there’s anything to celebrate yet.” Cora was anxious again. She wanted to carry this child. It was going to be a long couple of weeks before they found out if this had worked.
