They got together in the end. If Agnes was asked for any more detail on the movie plot, she probably wouldn’t have been able to give it. She kept glancing at Cora, whose face was dimly lit by the light of the screen, and more often than not, she found Cora staring back at her.

Agnes watched the gentle rise and fall of Cora’s chest. She had to suppress the urge to start feeling Cora up right then and there. Agnes imagined slipping a hand into Cora’s bra—but she stopped that thought right there. She was enjoying herself too much to risk getting kicked out for inappropriate behavior.

When the movie ended, they strolled out, still hand in hand.

“You should pick the restaurant—I picked the movie.”

Agnes already had a restaurant in mind. “How about Molly’s Corner? It’s just across from the bookstore.”

Molly’s Corner wasn’t somewhere Agnes had been before, but she knew it was a go-to romantic restaurant for couples. She and Jackie had come to this mall often, but Molly’s had only opened after Jackie died, so it wasn’t going to bring up any bittersweet memories.

“Sure. I haven’t been there before. What do they serve?”

“A little bit of everything, really—burgers, pizza, tacos, that kind of thing.”

“Sounds great. So, what did you think of the movie?”

Agnes scrambled for something to say. “It was good.”

“You weren’t paying attention, were you?”

Agnes felt her face going red. “You are rather distracting.”

Cora chuckled. “I have to admit, I wasn’t as attentive as I usually am when I’m watching something. You’re distracting, too, you know.”

A waiter took them to a table by the window. The restaurant was cute, with little cupids hanging from the ceiling and bright tapestries on the walls.

Agnes looked through the menu quickly, debating whether to go with the bacon cheeseburger or not. It looked delicious, but it was also bound to be messy.

“What are you thinking so hard about?”

“Spilling cheese sauce or grease down my front.”

“Oh, come on—how many times have I seen you covered in sweat and shaking? You really think a bit of cheese sauce is going to bother me?”

“I suppose not.” Agnes grinned. “A bacon cheeseburger it is, then.”

“You know, we’ll need to come up with a cover story, should anyone from work spot us.”

“We already have a cover story—we’re friends, having a girls’ night out.”

Cora pouted. “That’s not very exciting. When we agreed to do this in secret, I was expecting more cloak and dagger.”

“Would you prefer to be meeting a patient under witness protection in secret? Here sourcing black market drugs for the hospital?”

“Yeah, because that wouldn’t raise eyebrows.”

Their laughter was cut off by the waiter coming to take their orders.

Agnes was surprised by how normal it felt as she and Cora chatted over dinner. She had been nervous at first, but she shouldn’t have been. Official date or not, this was still Cora. Agnes was more comfortable with her than with anyone else.

Agnes put off her last few bites of dessert. She didn’t want this to end yet. She knew they had agreed to take this slow. Would inviting Cora to spend the night with her be too fast? Not even to have sex, though that was certainly on her mind, too. Agnes would just love to be held again as she fell asleep. It was one of the things she missed most about her time with Jackie—falling asleep together.

However, by any definition that would probably count as going too fast. She reminded herself that they were going slowly for her benefit. The last thing she wanted was to have a freak out and ruin everything before it could truly begin.

The conversation petered away into nothing during the drive back, but it left a comfortable silence behind.

Cora walked Agnes to the door, fiddling with her keys.
