“Come in.” Niko’s gaze stays on me as Donovan enters the room.

“Sorry to interrupt, but we’ve got a possible lead on Giovanni.”

Niko holds my gaze a moment longer and then turns to Donovan. "Where?"

"One of his men was caught around one of the clubs in Jersey."

"Get the men?—”

“Already on it.”

“Let’s go. I need to call Liam.” Niko heads to the door behind Donovan.

"Wait. Please, Niko."

He turns, eyes piercing through me.

“I know you need to do this… to kill my father, but surely, this” —I press my hands over my belly— “is more important right now. We need to talk.”

He shakes his head, each move breaking my heart a little bit more. “I’m not putting off what I should have finished a long time ago. Besides, the decision is made. And with him gone, you’ll be able to live free.” He doesn’t wait for my response. He leaves the room. He leaves me and his children.

In my office, I listen as Donovan tells me what’s going on.

“I’ve got Lou at the club holding the guy,” he says.

I’m trying to focus because the idea of eliminating my biggest enemies in one night would be a coup. If people feared me, imagine how’d they feel after learning I took out two Dons in a single evening. Instead, I’ve got Elena and fatherhood on an endless loop in my head. Elena. She’s been fire to my ice since the night I met her. The challenge to my control. And now, the mother of my child… no, children.

Frustration coils in my gut. I should have known, and yet, how can I blame her when in a single day, she’s been attacked, forced to kill, and I’m on my way to eliminate her father? I feel torn betweenIl Soldato Della Morteand being a man. A man who wants to love and be loved.

"Boss?" Donovan’s voice slices through my introspection.

“Yeah.”

“Do you want to get him at the club or have him brought to you?”

“Let’s get him. I want to control this the whole way.”

“Alright. We’ve got men on standby.”

“I need to call Liam. I’ll meet you in the garage.”

Donovan studies me, and I can’t imagine he can’t tell something is up, but I arch a brow at him. He shrugs and heads out.

I call Liam and ask him to arrange a new identity for Elena and plan to send her somewhere safe.

“Is something up?” he asks.

“I am on my way to kill Giovanni, but Elena doesn’t want this life. I promised her I’d get her out. I need it done ASAP. Tonight.”

He sighs, and I suspect I’m interrupting a night with a woman or perhaps he’s just watching sports recaps. But he agrees.

Moments later, I’m in the car heading to New Jersey with Donovan. The ride is quiet, at least in the car. In my head, Elena is on constant replay.

“You okay, Boss?”
