“You’re a poet and you didn’t even know it,” Pippi sassed.

“And you’re a brat, how about that?”

Catherine’s stomach clenched. She knew from their conversations that “brat” was a trigger word. Sam seemed to realize it too. His eyes widened and he sucked in a breath.

“Sweetie, I’m sorry,” Sam spoke low.

Pippi sat up and looked at him with unshed tears in her eyes. “But I’m your brat, right? Yours and Mommy’s?”

“Yes, sweet girl. You’re our brat,” he told her.

Cat barely held back the tears when Pippi threw herself into his arms. When she reached back and grabbed for Cat, the dam opened. The healing Pippi was experiencing was awe inspiring and the fact that she and the love of her life were a part of it was the most fulfilling feeling in the world. The three of them held tight to one another for a long time, allowing their emotions to play out how they needed to. There were still so many questions that needed to be answered. So many hurdles that needed to be leapt over, but none of that mattered in that moment. They were a family and that was all any of them ever wanted.

The End
