“Stop apologizing. I’m not giving up on this. Not yet.” A bell rang and Sadie jumped. “Crap on a cracker, we’re late.”

“Oh no! I’ve screwed everything up, haven’t I? I’m sorry.”

Sadie shook her head. “Hush, I have a plan, just go with it, okay. When I look at you all you have to do is nod your head. Can you do that?”

Piper nodded.

“Yes! Just like that. Okay, let’s go.” Sadie grabbed her hand and took off running, forcing Piper to keep up or fall flat on her face.

When they got to the classroom door, they were both out of breath. “Master Rett I’m so sorry. This is Pippi. She’s new here and she didn’t know where to find your class so I had to go get her.” Sadie looked at her which was her cue.

She nodded in short quick jerks, thankful she didn’t have to speak. Lying was not in her wheelhouse. She hated doing it and therefore she sucked at it. And to Sadie’s credit it hadn’t been a complete lie which was good because Master Derek made it clear what would happen if she was caught doing it again.

Master Rett regarded them for a beat and then nodded. “Okay, girls, take a seat. Sadie, behave,” he warned.

“Sir, yes Sir.” Sadie stood straight and saluted.

Piper couldn’t help but giggle at her antics. It didn’t hurt that the strict-looking teacher also cracked a smile. He tried to hide it, but Piper saw. Sadie took her hand again and pulled her to two empty seats.

The class, as it turned out, was absolutely fascinating and Piper found herself wishing she had a pen and paper to take notes. She listened with rapt attention as Master Rett taught about all the different acronyms surrounding the lifestyle as well as vocabulary terms Piper had never heard before.

When he handed out a stack of tests regarding everything he had just taught, she almost panicked. She hated tests. Who didn’t? But when she read the questions, the panic settled. It was all very straightforward and the information about the stuff she hadn’t known was relatively easy to recall. The bell rang as she was finishing the last question.

“As soon as you’re finished, you’re dismissed. I’ll have these all graded and delivered to you by morning.”

Piper waited for a few people to stand up and turn in their test before she did.

“Good girl. It was nice to meet you, Pippi.” The teacher smiled at her and she smiled back.

“It was nice to meet you too. I really enjoyed your class. Thank you.”

“You’re quite welcome. Have a good night.”

“I will.” She all but skipped out of the classroom feeling proud that she’d gone to the class and excited that she had actually learned a lot. Once in the hallway, she realized she had no idea where to go. She stood against the wall watching everyone walk here and there, all dressed in different styles of clothing that all reminded her of when she was young. There were boys and girls of all ages and ethnicities. It was beautiful really.

“Oh good you waited. I thought I might have lost ya,” Sadie said when she came out of the class. “How did you like it?”

“I enjoyed it a lot. I learned so much!”

“Good. Now about your birthday…” Sadie linked her arm in Pippi’s and started down the hall.

CHAPTER EIGHT

Catherine watched the time tick by and there was no word from Piper. She felt herself growing more and more agitated. Not with the sweet redhead, but with herself. She never should have cornered her like she had. She should have let Sam set something up with Derek. The poor girl had looked like a deer caught in the headlights. She’d probably screwed up any shot they had ever had with her.

“Another headache?” Sam asked when he came in and saw her with her head down on her desk.

“No.” She sighed heavily. “I fucked up.”

“Whoa!” Sam exclaimed, shutting the door behind him. “Little ears.”

“I’m sorry.” She cringed. She didn’t cuss often, and usually never while they were at work.

“What happened?” He came and stood in front of her desk. She could tell he was just barely holding back his Dominant side.

She shook her head. “You’re going to be upset with me. What time is it?”

“Five thirty.”
