I am woken up in the early morning hours by my cell phone buzzing from somewhere in the room. After slipping quietly out of bed, I locate my pants and pull the phone out of the pocket.

Kiril’s name flashes on the screen.

It is barely 3 a.m. If Kiril is phoning me, it must be important.

Pulling my pants on, I head out onto the balcony and pull the door shut behind me before answering.

“Kiril?”

“Fyodor, we have a problem.”

“What kind of problem?”

“It’s …” he starts before stopping to take a deep breath. “We intercepted one of Alexandr’s shipments.”

“Where? At one of our ports?”

“Yes.”

Alexandr is either really stupid or his balls have recently doubled in size if he thought he could bring his shipments through our ports after I ended our arrangement. My money is on the former.

“Son of a—”

“Fyodor, there’s something you should see.”

My brother sounds off, like he is struggling to contain himself. That is not like him at all, and it’s unnerving. “What is it?”

“Look, I don’t know … I have never seen anything like …” Kiril trails off, and I hear a shaky exhalation leave him. “I just—”

There is some rustling on the line as I hear him addressing someone in the background. “Don’t you fucking touch that! Get your ass away from there before I hand it to you!” he shouts.

More rustling. “Fyodor, just get down here now. Please.”

The tone of his voice spurs me into action. “I’m on my way.”

I leave a note for Kat because I don’t want to disturb her sleep and head down to meet my brother at the docks.

Kiril is pacing in the parking lot when I stop at our port.

“What took you so long?” he barks.

“Excuse me?”

He stops, propping a hand on his hip and rubbing the space between his eyes. “Sorry.”

I walk alongside him to our territory. “What’s going on, Kiril?”

“I can’t—” He shakes his head. “It’s easier if I show you.”

When we get close to a shipping container that has been lowered to the surface next to the cargo ship, Kiril points at one of our men standing guard.

“Did anyone go in?”

The man straightens and shakes his head furiously, fear written all over his face.

It is not like Kiril to scare anyone. Usually, he is good at getting what he wants by sweet-talking everyone.
