“What the–”

My body runs cold as I look down to find Tanner dead on the floor, blood pouring from a cut across his throat.

Not wasting another second, I turn to run back toward Harper. As I reach the mouth of the hallway, I see Logan standing against the wall. I couldn’t see him there when I came from the other direction. I don’t react fast enough, and his fist moves toward my face. Between the blow and my feet slick from Tanner’s blood, I fall back on my ass. Before I have a chance to get my bearings, Logan towers over me, “Sorry, man. Boss’s orders.” It all seems to happen in slow motion. I watch as he rears his arm back, hand wrapped around the barrel of his gun, only to bring it forward and slam the handle across my face.

It only takes a split second for darkness to take over, but as it does, the only thing I see is a pair of forest-green eyes staring back at me.

Harper, Baby.

Harper

Holy shit!

I sit up straight in bed, realizing I just told Ronan I loved him and went back to sleep! I slap my palm to my forehead, “Harp, you idiot.”

That is not how I wanted to do that, but in my comatose stupor, it just slipped out. Maybe he didn’t hear me? No, no. He definitely heard me. Ronan misses nothing. “Stupid, stupid, stupid.” I hit my forehead with my hand at each word.

There’s no taking it back now, but I can go to him and look him in the eyes as I say it. Flinging the covers off of me, I move towards Ronan’s dresser and throw on one of his shirts, making sure it covers enough that Tanner and Logan don’t get a free show. I notice the pile of rings he took off before bed on top of the dresser. I pick up one of my favorites, a silver signet ring with an “M” on it that he always wears on his pinky, and slide it onto my pointer finger. I smile down at it, a reminder of the men I have fallen so hard for. I mindlessly spin it around with my thumb as I head toward the door.

As I reach for the handle, it swings open towards me. “Logan? Is everything okay?” They usually stay in the main living area and never come into the rooms, especially without permission.

I watch as he reaches into his inside jacket pocket and pulls out a syringe full of liquid. Immediately, I back up toward the bathroom, wanting to lock myself inside. Logan is quicker than me, though, and as I spin around to get away from him, he’s already on me. His arm wraps around my chest, holding me tight to him, my back to his front. I don’t have time to beg or plead as he shoves the needle into my neck. My vision begins to blur in seconds, and I feel my body go weak in his arms. I hear Ronan’s phone ring from the bedside table, Mac’s picture filling the screen, but I can’t get my legs to move in its direction. If I could only reach it… If I could just talk to Mac, he could save me.

It’s wishful thinking. I can’t move.

Logan scoops me up in his arms and carries me towards the elevator. The last thing I see before darkness takes over is Ronan’s lifeless body lying on the floor.

“Baby…”
