There was a lot to find out from her.

I just wasn’t sure if I wanted to hear the answers to all the questions I had.

Chapter 10: Feremir

The tiny pebble made of paper would have been easy to miss if I did not know exactly what it was. It rolled underneath the door early in the morning, just as I was washing my face.

I grabbed the pebble-like message and carefully opened it.

Aislinn’s writing was neat despite being very small, so I was able to read the message, which only consisted of a time and place for us to meet before going to the resistance.

Getting rid of the message was another task. There was no fire burning in my room due to the increasingly good weather and I did not want to lit a fire just to burn the paper.

So I ate it.

I tried not to think about the message as I gulped it down and hoped that would not cause me to forget about it completely.

Trying to not think about it proved difficult.

The resistance. We were going to go there.

No. I could not think about that.

Once again, Aislinn’s little trick worked like a charm.

Whenever I wanted to avoid thinking about dangerous things, I could easily think about her soft lips on mine.

As I left my room and started heading out to breakfast, thinking about Aislinn put a smile on my face.

I passed Master Frin’s door without giving it a second thought.

He was not an early riser. My mornings were mostly free despite the queen constantly urging him to work on my divination skills. He was an old man. Scaring him wasn’t that easy. He knew that the most the queen would logically do to punish him was to take his title, and he didn’t seem to care much about it.

What Master Frin didn’t know was that the worst thing the queen could do was not something we could imagine when left to our own devices. She had the means and a dark imagination... She could...

No. I could not think about that.

Aislinn. That’s what I needed to focus on. As I entered the eating hall and took a seat to wait for my food to be given to me by the palace servants, my smile was wide once again. It was difficult not to smile when thinking about Aislinn.

She had kissed me, and deep down, I knew it was because she wanted to make me think less. But she had known that it would work. That meant she knew that I had a crush on her. And she didn’t seem to mind how encouraging a kiss like that could be.
