AISLINN HELPED ME UP. I was feeling dizzy and tired, but the hunger that had been making my stomach growl was completely gone as I stood in the middle of the hallway to try to gather my thoughts.

“Where were you going?” Aislinn asked.

“To the queen,” I replied, and then my insides twitched with urgency. “How long was I passed out?”

Aislinn’s expression darkened with an unreadable emotion.

“I don’t know,” she replied. “I saw you lying on the floor and ran across the hallway to reach you. But it couldn’t have been too long; after we left the library, I just went to my room to change and found you on my way to the great hall. You did not stir or move until I held your hand and called onto you.”

“That’s when I woke up,” I replied.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I didn’t know what was happening.”

“Why are you sorry?” I asked.

She looked hesitant for a second, as if she wasn’t sure about telling me what she was thinking. Then, I saw her deciding.

“I might have interrupted the vision,” she said. “Perhaps you would have seen more if I hadn’t intervened.”

“You can stop a vision?” I asked.

“Yes,” she replied. “You should never disturb someone having a vision. It might corrupt things or stop them from seeing the whole thing.”

“I didn’t know,” I told her. “But it doesn’t matter. If I am to see it, I will see it later.”

She nodded. “That is true.”

“I should go,” I told her. I wished that wasn’t true since this was the first time Aislinn was by my side, speaking directly to me. “The queen is waiting.”

“Will you tell her of your vision?” She asked.

There was something in her eyes that I couldn’t fully grasp.

I nodded. “She should know if this is something important. She will know what to do.”

Aislinn didn’t say anything. She stared at me for a long moment, thinking thoughts that were only hers.

“Okay,” she said. “I will save you a seat at supper.”

The girl I had been pining over ever since I had stepped foot in the palace turned away and walked off with that promise. I watched her go, unable to believe what she had just said.

I couldn’t help but smile despite the remaining images of horrible futures accompanying me as I quickly walked toward the entrance to the queen’s audience chamber.

She would save me a seat.

We would eat together. Laugh and joke; perhaps discuss my vision again, but Aislinn would be there, looking at me, talking to me.

My insides were warm now. The dizziness evaporated into thin air. When I turned a corner, I entered another hallway, and fae started passing by me. They were all heading to supper, to the great hall where Aislinn awaited me.

I felt like I was over the clouds until I reached the large doors guarded by two soldiers. Only then I remembered what I needed to do.

“I’m here to see the queen,” I told them, and with no questions, the guards opened the door to let me in.

I was in the waiting room again. The large hearts on either side of the room were burning. The secret door to the queen’s audience chamber was closed off, and I knew that meant I needed to use the entrance to the left.

I knocked on the door, and upon hearing the invitation from inside, I opened it.
