I’m seventy-two hours from walking out of Pine Haven Correctional as a free man when the riot starts.

Irish inmates with makeshift knives hunt me through burning cell blocks over some job I pulled years ago. Blood pours from my gut as I crash into the infirmary, expecting to die alone.

The prison nurse with compassionate eyes and steady hands doesn’t run when armed killers kick down her door. She patches my wounds, grabs her medical bag, and follows me into the service corridors without hesitation.
