Oscar Stafford, The Earl of Kendall, is in dire straits. While in Scotland avoiding the marriage mart, his steward ran off with one of the maids and quite a lot of money. Rather than cause a scandal, he hides the events that brought him back to London. If he obtains a new steward through the normal channels, all of the ton will know he was duped like a common fool.
