“What?” My brows furrowed. “Why?”

“She said it was because she’s a woman.”

“I highly doubt it,” I said.

“Nope. I believe it. Anyway, she was really down about it. She has an appointment tomorrow afternoon with another bank. Don’t you think it sucks that she even has to go through this? Especially when there is someone standing in front of me with the means to help her.” Her brow arched. “Come on, Elijah.” She took him from me. “By the way, Carter. Zoey doesn’t have plans tonight. I’m sure she only told you that because she’s upset and wants to be alone.”

“Thanks for telling me, Julia.”

“If you happen to go over to her apartment tonight because you care that she’s upset, don’t tell her I told you.”

“I’ll head over there right now and promise not to let on that I know anything.” I smiled and kissed her cheek.

I went upstairs and grabbed a few things. Taking my keys, I climbed into my car, picked up some Chinese food, and drove to Zoey’s.

“Zoey, it’s me.” I knocked on her door.

“Carter, what are you doing here?” she asked as she stood there holding a pint of Ben and Jerry’s and a spoon in her hand.

“I wasn’t taking no for an answer about dinner.” I held up the plastic bag.

“Carter, I really?—”

“Don’t care, Zoey.” I pushed past her and set the bag on the counter. “I can’t believe you turned down my dinner invitation for two other men.” I arched my brow as I pointed to the ice cream. “What’s going on? You only eat that when you’re overly stressed.”

“Nothing. I’m just tired.” She sighed as she grabbed two plates from the cabinet. “What did you bring?”

“Chinese. I hope you like it.”

“I do. How did you know I was home?” Her brows furrowed.

“I didn’t. I took a chance.” A smirk crossed my lips as I took the food out of the bag and over to the table. I saw her business plan sitting there, so I picked it up. “You finished your business plan?”

“Yeah.”

“Do you mind if I look it over?” I asked as I sat down.

“Looks to me like you already are.”

I chuckled.

She sat across from me and put some food on her plate.

“Is that all you’re going to eat?” I asked.

“You saw the Ben and Jerry’s in my hand, Carter. I’d already eaten half the pint before you arrived.”

“This is an excellent business plan. One of the best I’ve seen in a very long time. You have expensive taste in equipment.” I smiled.

“I want my bakery to be the best, and it’ll cost to make it that way.”

“Have you filed for all of your business licenses yet?” I asked her as I bit into my egg roll.

“Yes. I did all of that today.”

“This number right here.” I pointed. “This is what you have so far to get the business up and running?”

“Yep.” She looked down as she picked at her food.
