“You will be. I’ll be waiting up in Labor and Delivery.”

“Thanks, Georgia.”

Carter walked back into the bathroom. “Why are you still sitting there? We have to go.”

“I’m coming. Did you text the family?”

“Yes.”

“Did you grab my bag?”

“It’s already in the car, babe. Come on.”

“Gee, why are you rushing me?” I cocked my head.

“Because we need to get to the hospital.”

“I’m not having contractions,” I said as I stood up and doubled over. “Holy shit. I lied. Oh, my God.” It passed, and I felt like I could breathe again. “Let’s go now. Come on. Why are you just standing there, Carter?”

CHAPTER 40

Carter

I shook my head, and we climbed into the car and drove to the hospital. When we arrived, she was immediately taken up to the labor and delivery unit, where Georgia was waiting for us.

“There you are.” Georgia smiled.

After I helped Zoey change into her gown, the nurse hooked up the fetal monitor just as another contraction hit. Zoey screamed as her nails dug into my arm.

“It’s okay, babe. Breathe.”

“No. You will not be one of those husbands,” she spoke through gritted teeth. “Just be quiet.”

Georgia looked at me and smiled.

“You’re dilated to three,” Georgia said.

“Three? That’s it?” Zoey shouted. “Georgia, come here.” She held out her hand to her. Georgia walked over and took hold of it. “Please, take me to the O.R. and do a C-section.”

“If it comes to that, I will. But you and the baby are doing well. So, let’s try to have this baby vaginally. I can call for an epidural. You want it?”

“Yes. Please. I want it right now.”

“Okay. Sit tight.” Georgia smiled. “I’ll go call the anesthesiologist.”

“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Zoey glanced at me.

“You told me to be quiet.”

After a while, another contraction hit hard, and the beeping sounds of the monitor startled me. I looked over at it as Georgia ran into the room.

“The baby’s heart rate is dropping. We need to get her to the O.R. now,” she said to one of the nurses.

“Georgia, what’s happening?” I asked with panic.

“The cord must be wrapped around the baby’s neck. Don’t worry. This happens. Your baby and Zoey are going to be fine. Follow me.” We ran out of the room and down the hall to the O.R. “Get Carter ready. I’m prepping his wife for a C-section,” she said as she ran into the O.R.

Worry and fear crept through me, and my mind spun with many scenarios, none that were good. I needed to be strong for Zoey and my daughter. After dressing in a gown, the nurse led me inside the O.R., where Zoey was on the table.
