"Oh, that. Unfortunately, yes. Or maybe fortunately, yes. I mean it's not great to have to deal with him, but at least he doesn't try and hit on me. But I know what you're getting at. Sometimes the family structures you know about come from who made who into an immortal rather than actual lineage."

"Huh, fascinating."

"I guess? But it also doesn't make much difference. Family is family, no matter how much shared blood there is."

"True," he agreed.

"So, what next?" I asked. "And don't say a philosophical discussion about relationships."

He chuckled. "Maybe just something to eat."

"I can smell fresh doughnuts," I mused. "Those do sound good."

"Then fresh doughnuts it is."

The way he smiled at me made my heart do all kinds of things it hadn't in a very long time. And I intended to savour every moment of it.

It wasn't until I was standing outside the door to my penthouse that I realised I wasn't actually ready for the date to end. But here we were, and there was nothing I could do to change that.

I turned around to face him, searching for some kind of hint that he was feeling the same.

"I had a really good time. And I meant it. I'd never have guessed he was going to take me somewhere like a fair, but it had been so much fun to be able to let go and just have some time where nothing in the world mattered but what I was doing.

"Me too." He stepped closer, the heat radiating from his body a welcome temptation.

I closed the gap and wrapped my arms around his neck even as he leaned in to kiss me. It was more intense than last night, more demanding.

"Come inside," I murmured against his lips when I took a moment to breathe.

He pulled back slightly, but seemed to just be checking on how I was reacting.

"Okay."

The single word fluttered through me and opened all kinds of possibilities to me. I almost dropped my keys in my haste to open the door. I knew there was no need to rush. The night was still young and there was plenty of time to enjoy more of each other's company.

"Can I get you a drink?" I asked. "I don't think I have any lemonade, but I have a lot of other stuff." I made my way into the kitchen and set my bag on the counter so I could deal with my boots before getting us drinks.

"Whatever you're having," he responded.

"Maybe coffee."

"Isn't that supposed to be a code word?"

I let out an amused laugh. "Is it a code word if you still get the coffee?" I asked, switching on my machine and getting some of the grounds out of the cupboard. "If I asked you in for coffee and you got coffee in the morning, it would still count, right?"

"I've never thought about it like that."

"But it's true." I set it off and let it whirr. "Besides, it's not like you came inside thinking this was just about a drink, right?"

"It's about whatever you want it to be," he responded. He stepped closer, his arms on either side of me, trapping me between him and the counter.

Not that I was complaining in the slightest.
