London in an hour? After working for nearly twelve hours? I didn't even wait until I got to my desk to call Sophie.

“You really did this on purpose, didn’t you?” I asked.

“What do you mean?”

“Your boss is a slave driver.”

“What do you mean?” she grumbled again.

“He just told me to arrange to fly out to London right now after working all day.”

“Well, that's the norm,” she said. “And that’s one of the reasons I’ve been able to work with him for so long. I’ve been very flexible regarding his schedule, so he’s always been able to count on the fact that whenever he needed me, I was available.”

I listened to her and couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“I have law school tonight. I’m already late for my lesson.”

“Isn't it only online?”

“Online or not, I don’t want to miss it.”

“Well, you can listen to it on the plane?”

“What plane?” I asked, trying to control my frustration. “How does he expect me to find a flight to London within the hour?”

She was quiet for a moment, as though trying to process what I was saying, and then she got it.

“Oh, I get where your frustration is coming from,” she said. “It’s pretty easy to arrange the flight because he has his private plane. I’ll send you Levi's number right now, and he’ll get the jet ready. Then you need to call Michael as well to come pick you both up. His passport is in the safe in his office, and you… well, you need yours as well. Where is your passport? I’ll go get it. You can’t leave the office because you’re supposed to have your passport with you at all times. I'll get it and have it sent to you within the hour.”

Slowly, and through my exhausted brain, I listened to all she had just said, then dragged my notepad over to jot down the things I had to do to prepare for the trip we were apparently taking to London in the next hour.

I didn’t see how this could be possible, but knowing that Sophie could have and has easily pulled this off in the past, I decided to give it my very best, so I succumbed.

“Alright,” I told her as I noted my to-do list. “Call Michael to come pick us up…”

“Actually,” she said. “You need Michael to, first of all, drive you to Lucien's apartment so that you can pick up some toiletry essentials for him. He might decide to stay in London for a few more days, so it's always nice to be prepared.”

I really couldn’t believe her, even as I packed up my stuff.

“I enjoy working with him,” she said. “It’s because of him I’ve considered eventually starting a social media agency. His methods are novel and genius, and his work ethic is unparalleled. I’ve already watched him put out so many fires. Anyway, it’s worth the extra time and constant availability, plus my bonuses are ridiculous. I have no complaints.”

As I gathered my things, ready to hurry out the door, I had very few complaints either, since I would be flying private for the very first time.

“He has a private jet?” I asked as I headed to the elevators. “Why didn’t you tell me that?”

“Sweetie, when did we last have a proper conversation? And if we did, why would my boss and his wealthy toys come up?”

“It’s not exactly a toy.”

“Well toy or not you're about to get on it so have a blast. Pack a dinner attire of some sort because even though he goes for business sometimes he might end up using the opportunity to see some other contact or the other. Not only will you be stuck wherever he is for a couple of extra days, you might need to accompany him to dinner or other meetings. Pack light, but well.”

“Wow,” I said just as I arrived at the reception and headed out of the building to meet Michael, waiting for me. "We basically do the same job, but now I know that mine has been a joke compared to yours," I said to Sophie,

“It’s probably because you keep jumping around,” she says. “I didn’t gain access to all of this from the very first day. That being said, did you get his apartment key from the office?”

“What?" I stopped in my tracks in the middle of the street.

“You need the key to get into his apartment to pack his suitcase. He usually has one ready to go, but you need to include some of the suits Michael collected today, as well as some casual clothes. He has none of that in the office since he didn’t have a trip upcoming until next month.”
