His rosary beads glistened in the lights from the tree. “I believe she was with you the whole time, babe. I think she is how you survived until I found your crazy ass.” His eyes watered, then he choked out, “She did it, babe. You were found.” A few tears trickled down his beautiful dark skin. “And helped you find Legend’s family.” He exhaled an emotion-filled, labored breath. “Your true family.” He shrugged in amazement. “That’s a true Christmas miracle if you ask me.”

Silence and faith danced between us…

“Mommy?”

Bors released my face but whispered, “And she lives on, through you both.”

I looked to my daughter—the miracle Fiery Tierney made possible “Hi, my sweet—”

That is what she called me.

“—baby.” Now fully comprehending what Bors was trying to tell me, I opened my arms for Jade. “Mommy’s okay.”

When Jade crashed into my arms, I held her like I knew a very special woman wanted to hold me. Then, another Christmas miracle happened. My lungs filled with the mystical breeze Tierney spoke of when with my father for their first kiss.

With such blessed air in my lungs, my body eased and… I smiled. “She’s with us.”

“Yes,” my husband agreed.

When he didn’t say anything else, I finally noticed him holding up a finger for me to see. On the end of it hung a burnt piece of very thin wood. In the middle of it was a hand-carved word: LEGEND

My heart hammering with hope, I asked, “Did she make that?”

“I think so. It was in the journal, so I added the string.” He looked to the tree.

My deadly assassin had made this precious item into a Christmas ornament so I would never forget the blessing I had received.

I’d never experienced such a profound full-circle moment as I did while watching Jade hang the gift from the tree.

Sighing against Bors’ chest, I whispered, “Thank you.”

He had rescued me from Stain, guarded my body with weapons, and guarded my soul… with his heart. None of it would have been possible without my mother.

CHAPTER FIVE

Tierney

…Legend’s baby, my friend, is a gift—

Pausing my pen, I couldn’t stop smiling while sitting in the Dublin airport. I may have had to walk away from one of the grandest men I’d ever know, but wow, it was wonderful to have experienced his love. I would carry it with me, forever—

“Well, looky, looky who we found here.”

In an empty row of connected chairs, I recognized the voice, yet couldn’t be sure because of the sinister but playful tone.

I’d made it to Ireland and had my next ticket to get home, but hadn’t yet called Da to let him know. Now, I was unprotected.

From my left, a man I thought I knew well did some sort of odd happy skip in my direction. In shock, I stared but couldn’t believe the sight before me. It was Stain, but… it wasn’t.

“Do they serve green beer here?” he asked, as if that was the only reason he’d flown to Ireland.

No longer were his eyes cold. They still appeared psychotic, however, in a creepy clownish manner that made my skin crawl in warning.

I dared to question, “Stain?”

Legend had me heavily watched until I was in the air, leaving Texas behind. There was no word or sign of a Scorpion anywhere near Austin. Nonetheless, now standing in front of my chair was a man who looked identical to Stain.

Seemingly pleased with my dismay, he playfully grinned, yet his expression was laced with such malice that I could almost smell it in the air.
