Page 14 of Hostile Tyranny

I flipped to the next page, but it was gone. Another chunk of the journal had been ripped away from the worn spine and from my grasp of learning the woman’s past.

Then something occurred to me. My jaw fell open. “Bors. Stain. Twin.”

“I know, babe. I know.”

When Stain had Bors as a prisoner in the Scorpion’s basement, he’d learned a well-hidden secret.

And now, reading this journal, I see how Legend had the information he needed for revenge right in front of him but didn’t know it. I wished I could reach back in time and tell Legend that Stain indeed had a twin.

His name was Sting.

CHAPTER THREE

I can’t believe not being allowed to leave this clubhouse has transpired to me not wanting to leave. The Steel Stallions is a righteous club. I’m honored to have made friends here. I’m no longer watched or considered a threat. I cause laughter when I sometimes slip up with an Irish phrase, calling them a bugger. I even share nightly pints with the lads I’ve come to respect.

I’d arrived as Legend’s enemy.

And now, I was Steel Stallions’ Fiery Tierney.

Slowly, and mystified, I looked up from the journal and to the door where Bors was and thought about how he and I were once enemies, too.

Tonight, we sat at the club’s dilapidated bar and had whiskey shots in a goodbye celebration. They understood and respected that it was time for me to move on and continue my search for Maeve. My newfound friends even offered assistance, but I started this mission on my own so I’ll finish it on my own. If Da couldn’t find her, I’m convinced that another brute club can’t infiltrate like I can.

Dare I say Legend seemed sad I was leaving?

I’m going to try to get some sleep and not worry about the next man I must force myself to have sex with. I’m going to close my eyes and dream about someone who has helped me realize Stain wasn’t healthy for me. I’m going to lie in bed, and yet again, wish that Legend was lying with me.

Sweet dreams, Maeve. I hope you are safe. And I hope you are ‘found’ someday.

“She fell in love with my father,” I tell Bors as I pour whiskey over fresh ice I grabbed from the freezer. I needed it when I came across more blood stains to read around. “And now, she is about to trade her body to find her sister again.” Before I swallowed the cool liquid, I swallowed my sorrow for this woman.

“You hangin’ in there, babe?”

My throat was fighting me. So tight. I’d been where Tierney had been. My body was my weapon and my curse. It was used by men who I needed things from, like safety, or the money Stain demanded I earn.

I watched my finger slowly stir the ice in the golden-brown liquid. “I think so… Is it weird that her journey somehow… makes my own past feel not as lonely?”

“That’s actually what I was hoping for.”

My heart twitched in the warmth spreading through my chest. My eyes danced in forming tears. “I love you.”

His deep voice rumbled his heart’s words. “Dark life bright, Ivy. You are bright as the blinding sun.”

How he could think so highly of a woman who had literally been a forced prostitute had me hoping Tierney had found a guardian angel, too.

I woke to Legend, in my room, shaking my shoulders, waking me from a nightmare. It was about Maeve calling out to me. From darkness, she was falling. From where? I didn’t know, but it was raining, and she landed in the mud. I screamed when blood dripped from her head, her eyes growing vacant.

Sitting me up in bed to face him, Legend wrapped his arms around me as I was shaking violently. “Shh. I got ya. I got ya. It was just a nightmare.”

Crying, and holding on to him to help fight the terror in my soul, I told him how real it felt. Like an omen.

He pulled back his head to look me in the eyes. “If it was an omen, maybe it was to tell you she is gone—”

Sobbing, I begged him to stop, but he refused.

“You are so young and have already sacrificed so much. Stop punishing yourself!”

Feeling so betrayed by life, I screamed at him, telling him I had been there the day the men kidnapped her, and that I should’ve stopped them.
