This fallen angel was regal and so menacing that scary Onus suddenly seemed like a harmless blip in my past.

“Thank you,” praised Lu as if my thoughts were sincere compliments.

My brows rose in surprise. “It was an insult.”

He crossed his mammoth arms. “Not according to my perception.”

His eyes squinted as if waiting for the message to sink in.

“Oh. My perception is key to this lesson.”

Black wings shot open in a whoomp! Then he shot into the air so far, I shouldn’t have been able to hear but did, crystal clear. “Good thing you’re sharp, or I would have had to drop you on your head again, Warrior.” I wanted to ask what he meant by ‘warrior,’ but the dark speck he had turned into was now getting bigger, making me realize Lu was flying straight toward me. “Perception is key!” he promised.

I nodded. He’s not really going to crash into me—

Bam! I went flying backward, again, slamming into the earth. “The fuck?”

Standing at my feet, he laughed, “That Diesel, always such a thorn.”

From the ground, gasping for air again, I asked, “You know him?”

Lu offered his hand then yanked me up from the ground. “Just when I believed you to be intelligent. Now, can you please breathe properly?”

Perception. I took a deep breath until… “Hey! Why did you ram me to the ground?”

“Are you hurt?”

I wiggled and moved my body. “No.”

“Then why are you bitching?”

I glared. “Have you ever been told you’re a pain in the ass?”

“Not from any who ever lived to talk about it.”

I smirked. “Touché.”

A red apple suddenly appeared in his hand, then he took a bite. “Shall we speak of a deal I’ve been considering…?”

I was trying to listen, but a golden eagle started gracefully flying above us. A big smile took over my face. “Rya.”

Lu looked up then cursed, “Tricky, Rhea.”

Delicate fingers tickled my nose as she whispered, “Thuuuunddddddaaaaaa.”

I love you. “Yeah, baby.”

“Open your eyes.”

We were in the hammock again since her bed had been destroyed. “Only for a kiss.”

She giggled. “That’s why I’m waking you. I want to kiss my Thunda in the church before we leave this morning.”

As the sun rose, our fingers grazed the tall grass in the fields we had to pass through to get to church. It was like a walk back in time when we came to the church. At the bottom of the wooden steps, holding hands, we both gazed up, so many memories blowing into our spirits. It felt like home here. In the dirt on the steps, I half expected to see childlike footprints, but the years had washed them away. Now there were older sets from the night I rushed to her, learning of Bert’s murder.

As one, we walked up the stairs and inside.

Instantly, I remembered making love to her on the floor, right in front of Jesus on the wall.
