The lightning, with bolts of electricity booming about, was coming up from the ground. The opposite of what I believed lightning to do.
“What is lightning?”
The male voice came from behind me, however, after spinning around to face him, there was no one there. “Electricity?”
“An imbalance of nature.”
I spun, but again, he wasn’t where his voice was coming from.
“Thought we should meet, officially…”
I spun again.
“Since you know of our arrangement now.”
Anger spiked after spinning, yet-a-fucking-gain. “Hold still, coward.”
His voice coming from everywhere now, he said, “Don’t be like him. That only ends in death of purpose.”
I growled, so focused on not being toyed with by this guy. “Who?” I wanted to kill.
“It’s a dangerous time for you. Now focus.”
My jaw put pressure on my teeth. “I’m focused, asshole, on catching you.”
The word “No!” shouted in my head, so loud, it felt like a punishment.
I dropped to my knees, grabbing my head. “Fuck you.”
“Simple minds do simple things!” The voice was now right in front of me, but I couldn’t open my eyes. They hurt too much. Everything hurt when the man screamed, “Be more!”
Falling forward to my hands, liquid dripped from my nose. I was sure it was blood caused by the agony inside my skull. “I don’t understand.” I didn’t yell the reply out of fear of the pain.
“Pain is only a reaction. Be more.”
“But it hurts,” I gasped as it sliced through me.
“What is ‘hurt’ if there is no pain?”
My mind raced, trying to figure out his meaning.
“Ugh, no. No. Overthinking is human taught. Be more.”
“It would help if I could open my eyes.”
“Why?”
Thinking that was a stupid question, I gave a stupid answer. “So I can see?”
He exhaled in disappointment. “You were already shown where you are. Why do you need to ‘see’ more to be more?”
“How do I know I wasn’t only shown what someone wanted me to see?”
The pain stopped as if it never had existed.
“Ah, maybe you aren’t a mistake after all.”
Out of breath, I didn’t dare move.
