Like a lost child, I peered up at him. “What happened?”

He wiped under his eye. “We lost you for a while. Stay with me, okay?”

Gazing back to my Rosa, I noticed fading footprints in the mud. They were small.

They were Anita’s.

Before I could consider the meaning of it or what to do next, the lightning stopped.

Pure silence filled the night.

“Give her to me.”

I hadn’t heard his voice in years. And I knew it meant Rosa was truly gone. I also suddenly understood the conversation they’d had in the bathtub…

Elijah was here to take Rhea … home.

Petrified of the upcoming goodbye, I slowly looked up to the angel, no longer dirty with soot. The rain, the gods crying above, had washed it all away.

His wings were now white and glowing. He was grand and impressive. Elijah was … regal.

Weatherman uttered, “Holy mother of God.”

Piercer had fallen to his butt in shock, sitting on the wet ground.

My voice cracked, “I’m sorry.”

“I am not Rhea, Mother of a God.” Elijah declared righteously. “And I will never forgive you for what you have done or will do.”

Rosa had told me she couldn’t give me a new beginning, only a different ending. Was this what she meant? Or had I completely fucked it all up?

“It was you,” responded Elijah. “Now give me my dear friend.”

A tear slipped down his cheek.

I tried to stand while holding my most precious love, but I lacked the strength.

The angel snarled, “You are no longer part deity.”

At that heartbreaking moment, I was okay with it. I had never deserved such a gift.

With both an inner and outer strength I would never know, the prestigious angel bent down, took my Rosa from my arms, then proudly stood with her in his arms. “Remember your vow, Onus.”

Defeated beyond recognition, I looked to where Anita had run off to with my son and nodded. “I will not kill him.” I gazed at the bloody body in his arms. “I want to see her again.”

He lay his face to hers, cheek to cheek. “I wish you knew what that meant for her.”

That got my attention. I stood. “What? What does it mean for her?”

As if I repulsed him, he derided, “You aren’t worthy of her sacrifice.”

His knees bent, then he lifted into the air, magnificent wings carrying my Little Hellion away.

From the ground, I screamed to the sky, “What does it mean for heeeeeeer?”

If I were a terrible man while I had Rosa in my life fighting for me, one can only imagine how horrific I would become without her.

Blackout.
