“Exactly,” agreed Elijah.

“Get out of my head,” I sneered.

“Stop acting like you haven’t done it eighty million times.” He rebutted, his upper lip curling. “Are you pouting? Gods don’t pout.”

Smiling for the first time in a couple months, I hiccupped a thankful sob. “Thank you, my friend.”

He handed me the rest of the orange. “You may not feel the same after we’re done talking.”

I wiped tears. “I trust you.”

He chewed on his bottom lip before rushing out a scared whisper, “We have been so naïve.”

That I knew. My present circumstance screamed of my ignorance. “Yes.”

Elijah now appeared spooked, which was saying a lot for a warrior. “Do you remember when I would wake you? Asking why you kept saying you had to get to Miami?”

Feeling like that was centuries ago, after we would comfort each other with sex—physical contact that didn’t hurt for a change—he would wake me with this claim, but I would have no recollection of why I needed to get there. Only a haunted sensation that I would find my purpose.

“Yes. W-What about it.”

“Rhea, a day will come when you will have… a baby.”

My eyes slid shut. I hadn’t imagined him telling me of such a gift.

He added. “A first of his kind.”

I swayed until Elijah’s wings and arms kept me from melting to the ground. He kissed my hair, over and over. “What you see as mistakes were blessings all along.” His joy was palpable. “A gifted being who can stay on Earth—”

I burst into tears as it all made sense. “And fight for them all.”

SEVEN

VOWS, DEATH, AND TREACHERY

Onus

The night I met—found—or was found by Rosa/Rhea, I was experiencing a wonderful, dreamlike sensation. Now, after learning I had been the prey, not the hunter, I was full of so much fury, I was a volatile wrecking ball with the devil as my operator.

“What the fuck is your deity whore up to now?” asked Piercer. “And who the fuck is she talking to?”

In his cabin, similar to mine, we were both watching the monitor that was linked to the security camera in the Playground; the warehouse where the men liked to play most. Before Rosa, we didn’t have a camera in there, but I requested one, and luckily, Dad had allowed it. It was like Dad didn’t think abductees had the smarts to escape, so why bother to record them.

Staring at the monitor, the need to go nuclear hummed under my skin. My brother couldn’t see angels, but I sure the fuck could. “That winged fucker.”

Leaning over his tiny dining table, Piercer got closer to the screen, the glow painting a slightly blue tint across his dark skin. “Damn, I wish I had your abilities. Then again…” He peered behind me.

I smacked the back of his head. “No tail, asshole!”

“Can’t be too careful,” he shrugged. Minding the monitor again, his head jerked back in surprise. “Wow. I haven’t seen her smile in … a long time.”

That sinister bitch having any pleasure made me hostile. “I will kill her.”

He rolled his eyes as he leaned back in his dining chair, popping M&Ms into his mouth. “That ‘threat’ is all used up, brother.”

I ignored him because I was too busy watching that soot-fucker feed orange slices to Rosa. “Kill. Her. Dead.” Just because I didn’t want her heart anymore didn’t mean anyone else could try and earn it. I smacked the side of the monitor to get it to work properly. “Why the fuck is there no sound on here?”

Piercer lifted a brow. “Dad is a cheap fuck?”
